From Kranjska Gora over the border crossing Rateče we drive to Trbiž / Tarvisio. Further, we drive on the old road towards Videm / Udine. Already after a few kilometers from Trbiž / Tarvisio, the road into Ovčja vas / Valbruna branches off to the left. Here we turn left and we follow the road all the way to the mountain pasture Zajzera, where we park on a large parking lot.
Path description:
From the parking lot from where there is a very nice view towards the northern wall of Montaž we go on the path 611 on the right side of the chapel. We follow the signs for mountain hut Rifugio Grego and already at the beginning we start relatively steeply ascending through the forest, and later we also cross a few times the macadam road which also leads towards the mountain hut Rifugio Grego. After that, the path turns slightly to the right and it brings us on a forested ridge from which some views also open up on the northern side. For a better view, we need to step on some of the panoramic points on the edge of the ridge, and in doing so some caution is needed because the ridge is precipitous on the northern side.
Further, we continue ascending through the forest and occasionally beautiful views open up towards Montaž and Viš. We then follow such a path all the way to the mountain hut Rifugio Grego where there is a wonderful view mainly towards Montaž.
Macadam road at the mountain hut turns right and leads towards the nearby mountain pass Rudni vrh (Sella di Sompdogna), and we walk on a footpath to the signposts for the mountain hut. To the left leads the path 611 towards the bivouac Stuparich, and we continue straight on the path 651, which leads towards the lake Laghetto di Somdogna and further towards Krniška glavica (Jof di Sompdogna).
The path from the mountain hut ascends for some time through the forest, a little higher it becomes gentler and turns slightly to the right. Out of the forest the path then brings us to a clearing on which the lake Laghetto di Somdogna is located.
The path bypasses the lake on the right side, then ascends again and brings us into a larch forest where we come to a junction.
We go left on the path 610 towards the summit Krniška glavica (Jof di Sompdogna) and we start ascending even a little steeper through the forest. Higher the forest becomes thinner and views start opening up on the ridge of the Naborjet Mountains. The slope then for some time becomes less steep and the path leads us past some ruins from the time of the First World War. Here we walk through mostly larch forest and then the path turns a little to the right and brings us on a slope partly overgrown with dwarf pines. The path here again starts ascending steeper and then for quite some time still runs along the dwarf pines. From the path nice views also start opening up on the eastern and northern side where Viš and Montaž are most visible. In the last part the dwarf pines by the path become rarer and along a panoramic path we soon reach the peak on which there is a cross. A few dozen meters before the peak we will also notice along the path some military ruins and trenches. One of the structures is converted into a smaller bivouac.
