Access to starting point:
A) First, we drive to Nova Gorica, then continue driving towards Bovec and Tolmin. We then drive along the Soča Valley on the main road to the settlement of Plave, where, at the crossroads where the road to Paljevo branches off to the right, the described path begins. Since there are no arranged parking spaces at the starting point, we must park elsewhere, preferably at some suitable spot along the road before or behind the settlement, or on the other side of the Soča River near the little church or somewhere on the edge of the village.
B) We drive to the settlement of Most na Soči, from there towards Nova Gorica. When we arrive at the settlement of Plave, or at the crossroads where the road towards the settlement of Paljevo branches off to the left, we are at the start of the described path. Since there are no arranged parking spaces at the starting point, we must park elsewhere, preferably at some suitable spot along the road before or behind the settlement, or on the other side of the Soča River near the little church or somewhere on the edge of the village.
Path description:
From the settlement of Plave we continue along the asphalt road towards Paljevo. The path first leads past a few houses, then quickly brings us to the left hairpin bend, where there is a NOB marker on a smaller building. We continue along the fairly panoramic road, which past a bench brings us to the right hairpin bend, where straight ahead the footpath to Prižnica (elevation 383) continues, while we continue right, further along the road. We then cross the slopes to the right for some time, after which, shortly after crossing a torrent stream, the road in the hairpin bend turns sharply left. From the road along which we continue walking, a nice view opens up towards Korada and Prižnica. When the road from the slopes almost transitions to flatter terrain, we notice a cart track on the right side and unofficial markers for Kuk beside it (the markers for Kuk are made with spray).
The path continues through the forest, leading us across several junctions where we follow the markers for Kuk or dots on the trees. On somewhat more overgrown sections, the path, which mostly ascends moderately, flattens out higher up, then gradually turns slightly to the right, where it begins to ascend ever more steeply. There follows a few minutes of steep ascent, after which the path brings us below the forested ridge, continuing towards the left. There follows a few minutes of easy walking just below the ridge, then the path brings us out of the forest onto the panoramic takeoff site of Kuk, where there is also a small shelter.
Further on, a better-trodden path continues left of the shelter and traverses below the summit of Kuk. At the point where we approach the summit of Kuk most closely, we can leave the trail and climb to the forested Kuk in a minute; otherwise, we continue along the path, which begins to descend transversely. After a few minutes of transverse descent, we arrive at a macadam road, reaching it right at the marked junction.
From the junction, the path branches sharply left towards the settlement of Paljevo, the road continues right, by which we can reach the settlements of Zagora and Zagomila, while we continue straight past the monument erected in June 1916 for the commander of the 1st Mountain Brigade, FML Guido Novak von Arienti. Behind the monument, the road turns slightly left, then after a few minutes brings us to the hamlet of Vodice. Behind Vodice, we leave the road and continue right towards the monument (inscription on the sign). The path then turns even more to the right and brings us out of the forest onto a grassy hay meadow, where it continues along the outer edge of the pasture fence. With fine views of the surrounding hills and the Julian Alps, we return to the forest in a few minutes. The path continues through the forest, mostly gently ascending, then levels out further and brings us to a forest road, which we reach near the information boards.
At the information boards, the forest road continues left towards the pass of Preški vrh; a little further on and then right leads the path to the nearby monument at the eagles; further along the poorer road, the path continues towards the summit of Vodice and the mausoleum on top. From the information boards to the summit of Vodice it is only about 2 minutes' walk.
Plave - Kuk 1:35, Kuk - Vodice 45 minutes.
