Access to starting point:
First we drive to Kranjska Gora, then we continue the drive towards Rateče. At the intersection where the road to Planica branches off to the left, and to the right to Rateče, we continue straight. We turn into Rateče at the next intersection, which is located some 10 meters before the gas station. At the restaurant Mojmir we continue straight and then after 10 meters sharply left onto the road in the direction of Tromeja. The road then ascends above the village, and we park at an appropriate place by the road.
Path description:
From the starting point, we continue on the road alongside which we parked; it soon turns quite right and then ascends transversely towards the east. With a view of the peaks of the Julian Alps, the road gradually levels out and leads us to a less noticeable junction, where an unmarked path branches off to the left, which higher up joins the marked path from Italy.
At the mentioned junction, which is located before the road enters the forest, we continue left and proceed along the path that ascends transversely across a scenic hay meadow. For some time we ascend along the edge of the forest, then the path widens into a cart track, which enters the forest and leads us to the Italian side of the border. From here we walk some 10 steps more, then we join the marked path from Italy (starting point Pri Jalnu / Fusine Laghi).
Further on, we ascend transversely towards the northwest; the path leads us along an old mule track, which higher up joins the macadam road. When we step onto the road we continue sharply right; it ascends to a minor pass, beyond which the road to the summit Kavalar (also Kavalarka) / Monte Cavallar branches off to the left, while we continue straight along the road, which begins to descend moderately. For some time we descend along the road, beside which we notice numerous warnings that we must not leave the road, as otherwise we step onto private property. After a short descent, first the road to Marija Snežna / Madonna della Neve (on the sign Maria im Schnee) branches off to the left, a few meters further the road to Kopa / Monte Coppa (1497 m) to the right.
From the second junction we continue sharply right towards Kopa / Monte Coppa (straight to Peč (tromeja)) and proceed along the narrower road, which further ascends through dense forest. Higher up the road takes us past abandoned buildings (buildings from the time of the Rapallo border), a little further also to the statue of the Holy Mother of God. Here the road turns sharply left, then gradually turns into an initially still wide cart track. At the junction of cart tracks a few minutes above the statue of St. Mary we continue left and proceed along the moderately steep cart track. Further on, we occasionally get some views of the Julian, Carnic and Gailtal Alps, but the path mostly runs through dense forest. A little below the summit we reach some buildings of the former Rapallo border, and here the until-now quite rare markings also end.
We continue along the unmarked cart track, which soon ends, and from the end of the cart track we continue right along the indistinct ridge, along which we reach the summit of Kopa in a few steps.
