Access to starting point:
First, we drive to Cortina d'Ampezzo (you can get here via the border crossing Rateče or Predel to Trbiž / Tarvisio and then on the highway in the direction of Udine to the Tolmezzo exit. From Tolmezzo we follow the road in the direction of the village Ampezzo and the mountain pass Passo della Mauria. The road then descends and brings us to a junction, where we continue left (right also possible) in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo. At all following junctions, we follow the signs for Cortina d'Ampezzo. Or from the Primorska side, where we drive on the highway in the direction of Trst / Trieste. Further, we drive on the Italian highway in the direction of Padova, but only to the highway junction, where we continue in the direction of Veneto and Belluno. Near Belluno the highway ends, and at the next junctions we continue in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo and then follow the signs for the alpine pass Passo di Falzarego. We follow this ascending road to the place where the road to the mountain hut Rifugio Dibona branches off to the right (the turn-off is at an altitude of approx. 1700 m). The fairly damaged and initially asphalted road brings us higher to a junction, where we continue on the left lower road (right to the hut Duca d'Aosta) and follow it to the parking lot for the hut Dibona.
Route description:
From the parking lot, we continue on the macadam road past a gate. We follow this road to a junction with signposts, where we turn right onto the wide mule track following the signs »Rif. Camillo Giussani«. The wide path then slowly ascends, and in a left bend the path from the mountain hut Rifugio Pomedes joins us; a little later, from the left, path 404 also joins, which crosses the slopes below the south wall of Tofana di Rozes. The mule track then continues ascending up the increasingly steep slope between Tofana di Rozes and Tofana di Mezzo. Soon we reach the abandoned mountain hut Cantore. A short ascent follows along the cargo cableway, and we are already at the mountain hut Rifugio Giussani.

Discussion about the trip Rifugio Dibona - Rifugio Giussani

We partially walked the mentioned path last year at the end of August during descent from Tofane di Rozes (we shortened it considerably with nice scree slopes). I have no comments on this part of the description, only if I remember correctly, the access path to Rifugio Angelo Dibona is narrow but newly asphalted almost to the hut.

I'm trying to contact Rifugio Dibona by email, but they don't reply. The refuge has quite a large capacity, can 3 people arrive unannounced?

Today they contacted by email from Rifugio Dibona. Many thanks Smetar for the contact. Honestly, the price is a bit too high for them: 50 euros full board or 35 euros bed and breakfast.

Please recommend a similar Rifugio like Auronzo: reachable by car and prices are very good for members of mountaineering societies.

I'm wondering if anyone was at Dibona last year - what was the condition of the road? A few years ago it was catastrophic, so I'm curious if it has improved.

I was . The road is in different condition every year, depending on the scree moved by avalanches and later by flash floods. Last year it was normally drivable for Opel Insignia, just speed was max a few tens of km/h .
