Rifugio Pederü - Vallon Bianco

Access to starting point:
A) From Kranjska Gora over Korensko sedlo to Austria, where at the first larger crossroad we continue left towards Podklošter / Arnoldstein and Trbiž / Tarvisio. By the end of the settlement Podklošter signs for Šmohor / Hermagor point us to the right on a regional road, on which past the mentioned settlement we drive to the end of the Gailtal valley, or more precisely to the settlement Kötschach-Mauthen, where we turn right towards the settlement Oberdrauburg. The path ahead leads us over the Alpine pass Gailbergsattel (982 m), after which we descend into the mentioned settlement. After we cross the bridge over the river Drau, we continue left towards the settlement Lienz. In the main roundabout in Lienz we continue "left" in the direction of the settlement Sillian and Italy. Further, we cross the border between Austria and Italy, and we follow the main road past settlements Dobbiaco / Toblach, Villabassa / Niederdorf, Monguelfo - Tesido / Welsberg - Taisten, Brunico / Bruneck. Only a little after the last-mentioned town, past which leads a bypass road, we turn left into the Val Badia valley. Further, we drive through the mentioned valley and in the settlement Longega we turn left towards the settlement San Vigilio. In San Vigilio then at the crossroad we turn left following the signs »Pederü«. After approximately 200 meters we then turn right also following the signs »Pederü«. We follow this road all the way to the large parking lot in front of the mountain hut Rifugio Pederü.
B) From Nova Gorica we drive to Italy and continue on the motorway towards Venice / Venezia. At the town Portogruaro we leave the motorway towards Venice and continue right on the motorway towards Pordenone. At the next motorway junction near Conegliano we continue right towards Belluno. Near Belluno the motorway ends, and at the next crossroads we continue in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo. When we arrive in Cortina d'Ampezzo, we follow the signs for the Alpine pass Passo Falzarego. At the pass Passo Falzarego (2105 m) we turn right in the direction of the pass Valparola and further towards Alta Badia. In the settlement La Villa we turn right towards the settlement Brunico. We then follow the road to the settlement Longega where we turn right towards the settlement San Vigilio. In San Vigilio then at the crossroad we turn left following the signs »Pederü«. After approximately 200 meters we then turn right also following the signs »Pederü«. We follow this road all the way to the large parking lot in front of the mountain hut Rifugio Pederü.

Path description:
From the parking lot we continue to the junction for the hut. Signposts direct us slightly right on the footpath towards the huts Lavarela and Fanes, while left the path leads towards the hut Fodara Vedla. The gently sloping path first crosses a stream and a road, then it starts to ascend a little steeper through the dwarf pines. After the initial somewhat steeper section, the path becomes gentler further on, and on a shorter section it also descends a little. The path several times briefly joins the road, then again runs mostly through dwarf pines on the right side of the valley.
Further, the path turns somewhat to the right and increasingly beautiful views of the surrounding peaks begin to open up. Later we rejoin the mountain road that runs along the stream Rü dal Plan. The slightly ascending road then brings us to a junction.
To the right the road leads towards the hut Rifugio Lavarella (5 minutes), while at the junction we continue left. The road then ascends somewhat and soon brings us to the hut.
At the hut we head onto path 10 towards the saddle Limo pass and the pasture Gran Fanes. Initially we ascend somewhat steeper on the footpath through the forest, which brings us back onto the road. We continue right on the panoramic road. Somewhat higher the road turns left and along grassy slopes brings us to the saddle Ju de Limo (Italian Passo di Limo, German Limopass).
The road from the saddle descends slightly and quickly brings us to the lake Lago di Limo, where left a path branches off towards the summit Col Bechei.
From the lake we continue further on the gentle road, which soon brings us to another junction.
Left downhill a footpath branches off towards the valley Valle di Fanes, while we continue right on the panoramic road, which continues to descend slightly. Somewhat lower a macadam road from the valley Valle di Fanes joins from the left. From the junction only a short descent follows on the panoramic road to the hut Ütia de Gran Fanes.
From the hut we continue on the road that leads us across the panoramic pasture and we descend a little further. The road then crosses a small bridge and soon brings us to a marked junction.
At the junction we turn left onto path number 17 or the Path of Peace (Fridensweg / Via della pace). From the junction the path first runs across a grassy slope and then brings us into a belt of very sparse larch and pine forest. Further on the path is marked with number 17 and signs VB and FR, indicating the summits Vallon Bianco and Furcia Rossa. The path continues to ascend gently and runs along an old military mule track towards the southeast. The path slowly turns somewhat more to the left and a view towards the east onto the valley Valle di Fanes begins to open up. The mule track here brings us onto rockier terrain, after which we soon reach a junction.
To the right path 17 leads towards Monte Castello or the bivouac Bivacco della Pace, while we continue left on the path towards the summits Furcia Rossa and Vallon Bianco. From the junction the path then crosses the slopes somewhat more to the east for quite some time and brings us to somewhat steeper slopes. This is followed by an ascent mostly in switchbacks on the steep slope, and the path brings us to the next junction.
To the right a secured climbing path branches off towards the summit Furcia Rossa III and further towards the bivouac Bivacco della Pace. At the junction we continue left and ascend for some time further on the panoramic path. The path then turns somewhat to the right and brings us across a wide ledge and then along the upper edge of the scree back to a junction where right a path branches off towards the summit Furcia Rossa II, near which there is also a small bivouac Bivacco Baccon Barborka. To the mentioned bivouac it is otherwise approximately 10 minutes of walking.
At the junction we continue left towards the summit Vallon Bianco and after a short crossing the path brings us to the northern slopes of the mountain. Further we cross the slopes towards the east and the path also becomes somewhat exposed, aided by some steel cables. Here we also enter the nature park Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti d'Ampezzo. The path then turns right, crosses a short small bridge and soon brings us to a saddle where we will notice many ruins from the time of the First World War.
On the saddle we continue left and the well-maintained military path, carved into the steep slope, then ascends in a few switchbacks. The path then crosses even more exposed slopes towards the east and then crosses an interesting narrow bridge. Further the path mostly in a gentle ascent crosses exposed slopes towards the east, and along the path numerous ruins from the time of the First World War accompany us constantly. A little below the summit the path brings us to a smaller junction where we turn sharply right and ascend steeper with the aid of some pegs. To the summit only a short ascent follows on the panoramic upper slope of the mountain. From the summit, where there is a summit log box and a few small benches, there is an exceptional view over a large part of the Dolomites. Particularly beautiful is the view of the nearby Tofane.
We descend along the ascent path.
