Access to starting point:
A) From the highway Ljubljana - Jesenice, we take the Lesce exit, then continue driving towards Bled. In Bled, we "ignore" the left turn-offs towards Koritno, Bodešče, Ribno and Selo and continue driving to the traffic light, where the road branches off to the right towards Gorje and Pokljuka. At the mentioned crossroad, we continue straight and begin descending towards Lake Bled. When we notice the Chinese restaurant Peking on the left, we leave the main road towards Bohinjska Bistrica and, behind the restaurant, continue left onto Ulica Narodnih herojev. At a few smaller crossroads, we continue on the main road, then arrive at Cankarjeva cesta, along which we drive for some time, or until the crossroad by the chapel, where we continue slightly right towards Selo and Dobra gora (still on the main Ribno road). We continue driving on a gradually narrower road, which leads us for some time along meadows and fields, then passes into the forest, through which it begins to descend. Lower down, the forest ends, and we arrive in the village of Selo and a little further to a smaller crossroad, where we continue straight (left and then immediately right) downhill towards Sava and Kupljenik (left Ribno, right Bled). There follows some more descent on the still relatively narrow road, then the asphalt ends, and we drive on a somewhat wider macadam road to Selski most bridge over the Sava Bohinjka river. We park in a suitable spot by the bridge.
B) First, we drive to Podbrdo and from there to Bohinjska Bistrica (by car-train or via Soriška planina). From Bohinjska Bistrica, we continue driving towards Bled, and there, upon reaching the lake, we turn right towards Selo. We then drive along the narrow Mlinska cesta. Bled soon ends, and the still relatively narrow road brings us to the village of Selo, where at a small crossroad in the middle of the village we continue right towards Sava and Kupljenik (left Bled, straight Ribno). There follows some more descent on the still relatively narrow road, then the asphalt ends, and we drive on a somewhat wider macadam road to Selski most bridge over the Sava Bohinjka river. We park in a suitable spot by the bridge.
Path description:
From the starting point, we head over the bridge across Sava Bohinjka, from which a nice view opens onto Ribenska gora; after the bridge, we continue right towards Bohinjska Bela, Kupljenik and Talež. For a short time, we continue on the macadam road, then arrive at a smaller crossroad, where a road initially branches left towards Talež, but we continue straight towards Kupljenik. We continue along the road, then at the next unmarked crossroad, we go slightly left, walking along the right edge of the nearby fence. Further on, the still gentle road turns into a cart track, which we follow at junctions towards Kupljenik. A few minutes further, when the path reaches the slopes of Hom (675 m), it begins to ascend more steeply to the right, leading us across fairly steep slopes. Higher up, the forest temporarily ends, and the path brings us to a nice viewpoint at the chapel Na Koren, where we can pause briefly and enjoy the fine views.
The path ahead temporarily returns to the forest, then leads along the edge of meadows. Somewhat beyond the NOB memorial, which we notice on the left, the path turns a bit further left and begins to ascend towards the settlement of Kupljenik with views of Babji zob. We reach the asphalt road through Kupljenik a few steps above a small chapel and follow it left towards Jama. The path ahead passes a relatively new cross, then the road slowly begins to turn further right. At a small crossroad between individual houses, we continue right (left Talež), then proceed along a gentle asphalt road from which fine views open towards the Karawanks and Lake Bled. Past another NOB memorial and the fire station, we soon arrive at the spot where a short path branches left to the church of St. Štefan (from the church, it is possible via the hay meadow to continue to the marked path Kupljenik - Babji zob, as signs for the cave under Babji zob also point that way, but locals prefer the somewhat longer path by a few minutes that avoids the hay meadow); we continue straight along the road, which first turns slightly right, then left and descends to the right hairpin bend.
At the right hairpin bend, we leave the road and continue straight to the marked parking lot, where the marked footpath Kupljenik - Babji zob begins.
From the marked parking lot, we continue along a poor road towards the cave under Babji zob and Babji zob. The road first leads along the edge of a pasture, from where a nice view temporarily opens reaching to the highest peaks of the Karawanks, then after the left bend where we notice hiking signposts, it gradually enters the forest. We walk a few minutes along the road, then at a relatively new junction of macadam roads, continue slightly left (at the time of description, the junction was unmarked) onto a cart track that after a few metres turns even further left (straight to cave under Babji zob). An ascent through the forest follows; a few minutes higher, the cart track brings us to a panoramic hay meadow where a wooden hut stands at its lower edge, and a nice view opens towards Lake Bled and part of the Karawanks around Golica. The cart track brings us just a little higher to another hay meadow, where the signs lead right onto an initially poorly visible path that enters the forest. Once in the forest, the path becomes easy to follow and begins to ascend more steeply. A few minutes higher, we cross a new, not yet fully completed forest road; above it, the marked path ascends quite steeply through the forest. When the path turns right, it levels somewhat, then ascends diagonally right across ever steeper slopes. Higher up, the slope becomes even steeper, but the path is relatively wide, so the crossing causes no major difficulties, though in wet conditions, snow or leaves, more caution is needed, especially on descent. When the path bypasses a few rocky pinnacles, it turns left, enters a small valley, and a few steps further out of the forest onto Planina Prihod, which has just the right name, as we have reached the edge of Jelovica.
Description and pictures refer to conditions in 2015 (April).
