Access to starting point:
On the Tauern motorway in Austria take the exit for Bischofshofen and follow the road in the direction of Zell am See. After a little more than 20 km from Bischofshofen, take a left turn for Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein. Continue to Sportgastein and park at one of the big parking lots near the cable car.
An alternative option is a motorail connection between Mallnitz and Bad Gastein. You will save 150 km one way with this option (along with tunnel tolls on the Tauern motorway).
Public transport is also possible (a combination of a train and a bus).
Path description:
The trail from Sportgastein first crosses the vast Gasteiner-Tal valley (also Nassfeld valley or Nassfeldalm). There are many markings in the valley, since there are also many visitors (most of these leisurely walkers turn back at the end of the valley). At the beginning of the trail on the right side stands the hut Valeriehaus. Just after a couple of minutes of walking there is the Schareck alpine pasture (Schareckalm). To the end of the valley numerous alpine pastures follow one after another. Soon on the right Moisesalm and Pottingeralm. A trail to Schareck branches off here. Then on the left Nassfeldalm. At the end of the valley, where the path begins to ascend, stands Veitbaueralm. The path to there is gently sloping for about half an hour of walking, then it begins to steeply ascend along glacial moraines. In the next two and a half hours the hiker gains more than 800 meters of elevation and arrives at the Hagener Hut (Hagener Hütte, 2446 m).
From the hut the path descends to the signposts, next to which a bell stands, and continues westward. The path gently leads to a ground-level spring and then begins to ascend. About 150 elevation meters later the path brings you to the saddle, from which the 2727 m high Westerfrölkekogel rises to the north. The path just below the saddle is somewhat crumbly and requires careful steps.
From the saddle onward a pathless ridge awaits the hiker, which is very crumbly for the Hohe Tauern. It is necessary to be somewhat careful when placing steps, as layers of stones peel off the rocks. The direction is always logical, somewhere in the middle of the ridge keep somewhat more to the left and ascend through a shorter and smaller gully back onto the ridge and to the narrow but panoramic summit.
From the summit the three-thousander Schareck and the almost three-thousander Vorderer Geislkopf are nicely visible. A very nice view is also offered onto the Sportgastein valley and Nassfeldalm. The nearby Hagener Hütte is also visible.
Sportgastein – Hagener Hütte (3 h 15 min); Hagener Hütte – Westerfrölkekogel (1 h).
