Access to starting point:
a) We leave the Primorska motorway at the Postojna exit, then continue driving towards Pivka and Ilirska Bistrica. When we reach the settlement of Matenja vas, we continue right towards the Štivan nursery. We park at the nursery in the parking lot at the start of the Štivanski log nature trail.
b) First we drive to Pivka, then continue driving towards Postojna. When we reach the settlement of Matenja vas, we continue left towards the Štivan nursery. We park at the nursery in the parking lot at the start of the Štivanski log nature trail.
Route description:
Warning regarding trail condition: The Štivanski log trail (near the Štivan nursery) is currently in poor condition as it is no longer maintained. Infrastructure (wooden elements, bridges) and information boards are rapidly deteriorating and heavily overgrown. The passage behind the nursery greenhouses is difficult in several places and overgrown with shrubs, making the trail less pleasant for orientation and hiking.
At the start the trail leads through a maintained park, following left branches, then after a small bridge we quickly reach the greenhouses, which we bypass on the left side. We continue briefly in the same direction, then the wider path splits left and right; we continue straight, finding an overgrown path that ascends for a few steps. The trail ahead leads over overgrown terrain, passing an overgrown signboard, after which we step onto an asphalt road and follow it to the right. Looking back we see a larger pasture and a view towards Osojnica; we quickly leave the road and continue right onto a more overgrown path again. Shortly after the charcoal-burner's hut we cross another asphalt road, then continue along a small lake. Upon reaching the swings the nature trail continues left, descends to the Austrian well, briefly continues over a longer bridge, then the further overgrown trail returns in a semicircle to the swings, from which we quickly return to our starting point and the end of the Štivanski log nature trail.
The described trail is not maintained and is deteriorating.
