Access to starting point:
We drive to Ploče, from where we continue towards Dubrovnik. We drive across the Pelješac Bridge and continue on the fast road to the Prapratno exit, where we turn left towards the island of Mljet. In the ferry port we buy tickets and take the ferry to Sobra. There we continue right towards Pomeni. Just after the place Polače (near the place Goveđari) we pay attention to the left turn-off to Jezero. After a short descent we reach the parking lot. At the parking lot is the NP Mljet facility, where we must buy a ticket for NP Mljet. In August 2024 the entrance ticket was 25 EUR per person.
Path description:
From the starting point we head past the NP Mljet facility to the road, where signs direct us right into the forest towards Montokuc. The path gently ascends through the forest and in 5 minutes brings us to the road, where we continue left. Along the road there are plenty of signs and an information board. It is possible to reach here even if we go left from the starting point. We continue along the road, which ascends somewhat more steeply to a small clearing, where the path to Montokuc and Veliki Gradac branches off to the right. The path gently ascends through the forest. After approximately 15 minutes of walking the path from Polače joins us from the left, a few minutes later we arrive at a new junction, where we continue straight. Right Veliki Gradac - 10 minutes. The path crosses the slope and slightly ascends to the next junction, where we continue right. The path is gentle in continuation, then transitions to the slope of an unnamed peak and later Montokuca. After approximately 10 minutes of crossing, the path gradually emerges from the forest and makes some turns. Soon we notice the viewpoint tower on Montokuc, to which we have a few minutes of walking left. On the rock in front of the tower is the stamp of the Mljet hiking circuit. It is possible to climb the tower, from which a nice view opens up on all sides. The true summit of Montokuca is a little further ahead in the forest.
Description and pictures refer to the state in August 2024.
