Access to starting point:
We drive to Ploče, from where we continue towards Dubrovnik. We drive across the Pelješac Bridge and continue on the expressway to the Prapratno exit, where we turn left towards Mljet island. In the ferry port we buy tickets and take the ferry to Sobra. There we continue right towards Pomena. Just after the town of Polače (near the village of Goveđari) we pay attention to the left turnoff to Jezero. After a short descent we reach the parking lot. At the parking lot is the NP Mljet building, where we must buy a ticket for NP Mljet. In August 2024 the entrance fee was 25 EUR per person.
Path description:
From the starting point we head past the NP Mljet building to the road, where signs direct us left onto the asphalt road towards Veliki Gradac and Montokuc. The road leads past the building on the right to the junction for Veliki Gradec. We turn right onto the trail. Straight to Montokuc - direct path. The path initially ascends gently, then after a few minutes turns right onto the hillside and becomes somewhat more rocky. The path makes a few short switchbacks. Ever better views open up to Jezero with the island of St. Mary and the sea. The path enters the forest and soon we reach a junction just below the summit. Right goes the path to Montokuc and the northern path joins us. We turn right towards Montokuc (left Veliki Gradac 1 minute). The path descends slightly and enters the forest. After a few zigzags we arrive at a marked junction, where the direct path joins from the left. We continue right. The path crosses the slope and ascends gently to the next junction, where we continue right. The path is gentle thereafter, then transitions to the slope of an unnamed peak and later Montokuc. After about 10 minutes of traversing, the path gradually leaves the forest and makes a few switchbacks. Soon we notice the viewpoint tower on Montokuc, a few minutes' walk away. On the rock in front of the tower is the stamp of the Mljet mountaineering circuit. It is possible to climb the tower, from which a nice view opens in all directions. The true summit of Montokuc is a little further in the forest.
