Access to starting point:
A) Over one of the border crossings with Austria (Korensko sedlo, Karawanks Tunnel, Ljubelj Pass, Jezerski vrh Pass, Pavličev vrh Pass), we drive into Austria, then continue driving on the so-called southern motorway towards Graz / Gradec. Along the mentioned motorway, we drive to the town of Wolfsberg / Volšperk, where we leave the motorway; then, upon reaching the old or regional road, we continue driving towards the town of St. Gertraud. In the town of St. Gertraud, we notice signs for the Alpine pass Weinebene, which direct us right onto an ascending asphalt road. Along the mentioned road, we drive approximately 18 km, then arrive at the mentioned Alpine pass, which is located at an altitude of 1668 m.
B) Over the border crossing Holmec or Vič, we drive into Austria, then continue driving towards the town of Wolfsberg / Volšperk. From Wolfsberg, we continue along the regional road towards the town of St.
C) First, we drive to Maribor, then continue driving along the motorway towards the border crossing Šentilj and further along the Austrian motorway towards Graz / Gradec. We leave the mentioned motorway at the exit for the town of Lipnica / Leibnitz. When we drive off the motorway into the roundabout, we continue towards the town of Lipnica / Leibnitz, and then drive south of the village Gralla, which today is already a kind of peripheral part of Lipnica. Further on, the road takes us past the industrial or commercial zone; at the roundabout by the Hofer store, we continue "straight" onto the second exit towards the town of Lonč / Deutschlandsberg. Further on, we drive for some time along the main road, then after the village Graschach turn right towards the town of Lonč / Deutschlandsberg. At the roundabout directly next to the town of Lonč / Deutschlandsberg, we continue "straight" towards the Alpine pass Weinebene. From here on, the road begins to ascend more steeply, and we follow it to the mentioned pass, arriving after approximately 20 km of driving from the start of the settlement Lonč.
Path description:
From the Weinebene pass we continue towards the southwest, where next to the Weinebenehaus hut (slightly aside is also the Göslerhütte hut) the mountain signposts for Gr. Speikkogel (Gr. Speikkogel is the highest peak of Golica / Koralpe), Jauksattel / Kleinalp, Grillitschhütte, Großhöllerhütte and Koralpenhaus direct us onto a gentle gravel road that ascends across a gentle grassy slope. The marked path, which continues along the road, soon crosses a grazing fence, which after a few minutes brings us to a small saddle from which a nice view opens towards the highest peak of Golica and the peaks north to northeast of the mentioned peak. When the road begins to descend, a parallel marked mountain path branches off slightly to the right, continuing across extensive pastures. When the path stops descending gently, it ascends slightly and returns to the road, which has been closed to public traffic from the very start. Further on, the road ascends gently to moderately along the southeastern slopes of the Brandhöhe peak (1886 m (Brandhöhe is the peak located above the ski lifts of the Weinebene ski area)), and a bit further also of the Moschkogel peak (1916 m). When we reach the slopes of the latter peak, the road begins to descend transversely towards the saddle located south of the mentioned peak.
On the saddle, where there is a marked junction, we arrive from Austrian Styria / Steiermark to Austrian Carinthia / Kärnten, and we continue slightly right onto the cart track that crosses the slopes to the right (the cart track is briefly unmarked, as the marked path leads right to the nearby Grillitschhütte hut and from there onwards to the cart track; the path straight along the fence continues towards the Großer Speikkogel peak - panoramic path).
For a few minutes we cross the slopes below the Hühnerstütze peak (1989 m), then arrive at the Schäferkreuz cross, where the previously mentioned path past the Grillitschhütte hut joins us. Here we continue straight and in a few minutes arrive at the indistinct saddle between Hühnerstütze (1989 m) on the left and Sprungkogel peak (1868 m) on the right.
At the saddle there is a marked junction, where we continue slightly left towards the Großer Speikkogel peak (straight to Großhöllerhütte hut). We continue along the wide cart track, which further crosses a few streams. The gentle cart track, which initially even descends slightly, higher up turns into a gentle footpath that continues across panoramic and gentle meadows. A bit further, on the Großes Kar plateau, we arrive at a marked junction, where we go right towards the Koralpenhaus hut (straight leads the path towards the Gr. Speikkogel peak).
Further on, we cross the grazing Großes Kar plateau in the direction towards the west and continue for some time without major elevation changes. When we gradually begin to ascend moderately, the path past the Poms waterfall and the path past the Großhöllerhütte hut join from the right.
Here we continue straight towards the Koralpenhaus hut and cross the last stream, then begin to ascend more steeply along the also steeper slope.
After a few minutes of steep transverse ascent, we reach the wide northern ridge of the Steinschneider peak, along which we continue an increasingly panoramic ascent. The path and ridge then turn slightly to the left, and we quickly reach the 2070 m high Steinschneider peak.
