Access to starting point:
From Kranjska Gora, drive over Vršič Pass towards Bovec or vice versa, but only to the 49th hairpin turn of the Vršič road (near the village of Trenta). Here, turn onto the side road towards the source of the Soča River. The road quickly brings us after a short ascent to the parking lot in front of the Koča pri izviru Soče hut, but we continue left across the bridge and follow the road further to the parking lot at the end of the road (at the parking lot, notice the mountain signs for Bavški Grintavec, the waterfalls of Suhega potoka, and Jalovec).
Route description:
From the parking lot, head right onto the footpath towards Jalovec and the shelter below Špik (the left path leads to Bavški Grintavec). The path, from which a nice view of the aforementioned Bavški Grintavec opens at the beginning, soon enters dense forest, where it begins to ascend steeply. The steep path, which runs through the forest almost the entire time, brings us after approximately an hour and a half of walking to a junction, where we continue on the left path towards the Shelter below Špik (right to Vršič, Jalovec, Mali kot and Jalovška škrbina, both paths are marked). The path ahead levels out slightly for a while, then begins to ascend steeply again, this time through occasionally sparser forest. Higher up, the forest becomes even sparser, and beautiful views of the surrounding peaks begin to open from the path. A little further on, we reach a less noticeable junction, where a marked but little-trodden path to Bavški Grintavec branches left (path over Konj).
Turn left onto the mentioned path (straight to Shelter below Špik) and cross the slopes towards the southwest. The path here mostly runs along scree and sparse larches. For a short time, the path then turns slightly right, where we cross a shorter steep slope. The poorly trodden path then crosses the slopes again, and ahead we can clearly see the ridge of peaks from Vršac to Veliki Pelc. The path then descends slightly and leads us towards the wide gully on the left side of Vršac. When we reach the mentioned gully, we begin to ascend more steeply again. Initially, the path runs along the right side, then follows the ascent along the left side of the gully, which is covered with grass. Higher up, as we approach the steep rocky slopes, the path turns decisively left. This is followed by an ascent through a slightly overgrown gully, then the path turns left and begins to ascend a steep and exposed terrain. The path here is very poorly trodden and overgrown with grass and other vegetation, making it particularly dangerous for slipping when wet. The path is also not secured, so extra caution is required.
Such a path then brings us to less steep grassy slopes on the southeastern side of Vršac. Here the path is very poorly visible and soon begins to descend more noticeably. Continuing mostly downhill, we cross the grassy clearing Srednjica towards the south. The path, which is marked but poorly visible, descends here about 200 meters of elevation. From the grassy slopes, the path then brings us into a belt of sparse larch forest. As we approach the deep precipitous gully, the path turns right and begins to ascend more steeply. The path soon turns left again and crosses the exposed slope via a narrow passage above the gully called Prehodec. Since the path is not secured, extra caution is needed. The path then brings us to the next grassy clearing called Za Razorcem.
The poorly visible path continues to cross grassy slopes and later descends slightly into a small valley where we will notice a large boulder and a puddle along the path. We continue through the valley where the path is very poorly visible and occasionally slightly overgrown. When we reach the slopes of Skutnik, we leave the mentioned valley and ascend left onto an indistinct grassy ridge. We continue along the mentioned ridge, and the path soon leaves the grassy slopes. Here the path first runs along scree, then crosses a somewhat steeper slope above a wide gully. Here we are also aided by fixed protection. The path continues to cross occasionally quite steep slopes on the southern side of the peak Zagorelcem. The path then brings us to scree slopes below Kanjski preval and begins to ascend somewhat more steeply again. From the scree, the path turns right and after a short ascent brings us to grassy terrain between Zagorelcem and Šmihelovcem.
Here we leave the marked path and head right into the valley between the mentioned peaks. Here we can walk along the bottom of the valley where a path is occasionally visible. As we approach the saddle Čez Lužo somewhat, we will notice a distinct gully left of the peak Šmihelovec leading towards the ridge. Over scree, head towards the mentioned gully, which then takes us to a small notch on the ridge. The gully, which is relatively steep, also has quite a lot of scree, so it can be slippery. It is recommended to ascend along the left edge of the gully where we can also use the rocks.
At the notch, where a view to the west opens, continue right and first cross the slope on the left (western) side of the ridge. Caution is needed during the crossing, as the slope is slightly exposed and dangerous for slipping. On this section, we are also helped by some cairns. After a few tens of meters of crossing, head right upwards along a fairly steep slope that is partially covered with grass. Ascend the slope, which remains dangerous for slipping, towards the ridge. Just before the ridge, the steepness eases slightly, but we continue slightly left, and only a short ascent remains to the panoramic summit.
For the descent, first return to the marked path and then briefly continue along the poorly trodden path towards the Kanja saddle. At the junction, turn left downhill and descend along the better-trodden path past Planina Zapotok back to the starting point in Zadnja Trenta.
Starting point - Planina Trenta 1:30, Planina Trenta - junction to Sedlo Planja 0:50, junction to Sedlo Planja - Konj 1:05, Konj - junction from marked path 2:50, junction from marked path - Šmihelovec 0:55.

Along the route: Planina Trenta (1398m), Odcep proti Sedlu Planja (1681m), Konj (1805m), Prehodec (1700m), Za Razorcem (1724m), Razor (1770m), Odcep z markirane poti (1922m), Čez Lužo (1986m)

Discussion about the trip Zadnja Trenta (Flori) - Šmihelovec (via Prehodec)

Fantastic trail, its length is directly proportional to the wild beauty of these parts... For the return I recommend the marked trail Kanja - Zapotok - Fiori, although its start requires climbing to Kanja - but we can shorten it a bit and find the mentioned trail on the other side of the gully around the position of picture 117 (easy crossing). The continuation of this trail is visible in pictures 119 and 122.

Just adding that from the junction onwards the path towards Špička is nicely trodden. I went there last year on the descent. I haven't gone on this described one yet. Although this pathless magical world is quite familiar to me.

Wonderful trail, which I hiked, only in the opposite direction and also listened to the rutting of deer.

Yes, due to being untrodden and faded markings in places, the trail is adrenaline-pumping and wonderfully beautiful. Caution is needed because of snakes!

Last autumn we climbed to Šmihelovec and Zagorelec, back via the hunting trail towards Špička. At the beginning the trail is marked and traceable, but after a while it completely disappears or is overgrown. So we had quite some trouble descending through steep gullies in the last minutes of the day to Planina Zapotok.

There are at least three easier passages though.

As I wrote about our experience, we had quite some luck and persistence to find the passage to planina Zapotok just before dark, but that's the charm of Trenta's pathless routes.
