From Kranjska Gora over the Vršič Pass we drive towards Bovec or vice versa, but only to the 49th hairpin turn of the Vršič road (near the village of Trenta). Here we turn onto a side road in the direction of the source of the Soča River. The road after a shorter ascent quickly brings us to the parking lot before the Koča pri izviru Soče hut, but we continue left over a bridge and follow the road further to the parking lot at the end of the road (at the parking lot we notice signposts for Bavški Grintavec, the waterfalls of Suhega potoka and Jalovec).
Path description:
From the parking lot, we continue on the road which is closed with a gate in the direction of Bavški Grintavec. We continue slightly left on the road which runs along the bed of Suhega potoka, to the right leads the path towards Zavetišče pod Špičkom and Jalovec. For some time we still walk on the mentioned road, then the path crosses the mentioned bed. At the crossing, we have to be somewhat more attentive as the trail here is not visible. On the other side, we can notice a wooden post with signposts. On the other side a gentle path first leads past a few private huts and then for some time runs through the forest along the left side of the bed. Further on, we will also notice quite a few fallen trees along the path, which are the result of snow avalanches. Somewhat later, the path brings us to a marked junction where the path to Zapotoški slapovi branches off to the left, and we continue right in the direction of Bavški Grintavec.
The path then quickly brings us to the bed of a torrent where the trail again becomes somewhat lost. We continue a few more meters along the bed, then cross it slightly to the right and head towards the other bed of the torrent, which we see slightly to the right. We begin to ascend along the left side of the mentioned bed and the path becomes visible again. After a short ascent, the path leaves the mentioned bed and turns decisively to the left.
Here we first cross slopes covered with bushes and dwarf pines, then the path brings us into a sparse forest. The path further occasionally ascends somewhat more steeply, on a shorter section we are also assisted by some pegs with the help of which we reach a viewpoint where a cross is also erected. Further on, the slopes we cross become even steeper and some caution is required. Here the path crosses a few shorter steep gullies, occasionally we are also assisted by safety gear.
Further on, the path mostly runs through the forest, occasionally beautiful views still open up on the peaks above Zadnja Trenta.
We continue mostly traversing up steep slopes and somewhat higher a view also opens up from the path towards Zapotoški slapovi.
The path soon withdraws from the steep slopes above the valley and brings us through the forest to Planina Zapotok. On the pasture, which has not been active for a long time, we continue to the shepherd hut, on the left side below the hut we will also notice a stream that originates nearby.
From the hut, we first descend slightly to the bed of the stream where we continue right. The path then brings us back into the forest and begins to ascend, soon turning more decisively to the left. Here on a short section we are also assisted by a steel cable. Further on, we continue ascending through the forest, and the path begins to turn right again.
Later, the path brings us to a smaller junction where an unmarked trail branches off to the left towards the ridge of Srebrnjak (marked with a cairn), and we continue right on the marked path. Further on, we enter a somewhat sparser larch forest and increasingly beautiful views begin to open up on the surrounding peaks. When we approach the slopes of Zapotoški vrh somewhat and the larches become quite sparse, the path brings us to another junction.
This time an unmarked path branches off to the left towards the saddle Velika Vrata, and we continue right further on the marked path. Here the path then leads us for some time along dwarf pines, then across a partly grassy slope and finally we reach the scree under Bavški Grintavec. Here we also reach a marked junction where the path to Bavški Grintavec branches off to the left, and we continue right towards the saddle Kanja. Further on, we then cross scree for some time, but when we approach the saddle somewhat, the path to the saddle splits into two forks. We continue on the right one and when the grassy slopes on our right are not overly steep we also leave this path and head right into pathless terrain.
When we leave the marked path we cross a grassy slope, which brings us to an otherwise marked but very poorly visible path that leads towards Zavetišče pod Špičkom. We also quickly leave the mentioned path and continue up the valley between the peaks Šmihelovec on the left and Zagorelec on the right in the direction towards the saddle Čez Lužo. Here we can walk along the valley bottom or higher on the right side where a trail is occasionally visible.
When we approach the saddle Čez Lužo we turn right and ascend to the ridge where we continue left. Further on, we then ascend all the time along the panoramic ridge all the way to the summit of Zagorelec.
