Description of mountain:
The castle stands on a scenic hill above the namesake village, sheltered by the Orlica forests. Its history dates back to the 13th century, when it served as an important defensive point of the Salzburg Archdiocese. Today, visitors are first greeted by a mighty Romanesque tower, which with its height of 36 meters dominates the surroundings. The walls of this tower are more than two meters thick in places, testifying to the former invincibility of the fortress.
The castle's special charm is provided by the English park that stretches directly in front of the entrance. Exotic trees thrive in it, among which three huge sequoias stand out. These are a true natural attraction with their height and girth, and a rare sight in this part of Slovenia. The path to the castle from the village center is easy and leads past a pond and the birthplace of linguist Maks Pleteršnik. The entire ascent takes about half an hour and follows shaded paths suitable for a family outing or a relaxed walk. At the castle itself, hikers can quench their thirst at a fountain with drinking water, while the outdoor viewing platform and benches in the park are ideal for resting.
The castle also serves as a key junction for longer ascents into the Orliško pogorje. From the castle walls, the path continues through a beech forest to the north, where after about 40 minutes of moderate ascent it joins the marked path to the Bivak of the Pišece Hunting Society. From there, it is just a short climb to the summit of Veliki Špiček, where a logbook and stamp are available. For those seeking shorter access, there is a parking lot at Lake Marof, or Ribnik, from which a wide cart track leads to the castle. Nature lovers can combine the visit with a view of the natural feature Duplo, where the Gabernica stream originates.
