Description of mountain:
Idaion Andro or the Cave of Ida (also Ideon Andron; Gr. Ιδαίον Άντρον) is located in the Psiloritis mountain range at 1,525 m above sea level, above the Nida plateau on the island of Crete in Greece. The entrance to the cave is via stairs; even in August there is snow inside, and most of the cave is right at the foot of the stairs.
According to Greek mythology, the god Zeus, son of the Titan father Kronos and mother Rhea (mother Rhea was also Kronos's sister), grew up in this cave. Since Kronos had previously castrated his father Uranus and feared the same fate, he wanted to get rid of all his offspring and ate his children. Mother Rhea therefore hid Zeus in this cave; the nymph Melissa and the goat Amalthea cared for him, while demons at the cave entrance muffled all sounds coming from inside.
