Description of saddle:
Schmalzscharte is a 2,444-meter-high saddle or notch in the Ankogel mountain group, which is part of the High Tauern. It is interesting mainly because of the source of the Mur River (1,898 meters), located in the upper part of the Mur River valley. From the pass, views open up toward the northern walls of the peaks Kaltwandspitze, Kölnbreinspitze, and Großer Hafner. The view is enhanced by the mountain lake Unterer Schwarzsee, which lies directly below the saddle. The saddle is also accessible from the Maltatal valley.
