Description of mountain:
Sveta Gora (established in mountaineering and religious literature as Sveta Gora above Gerovo or Sveta Gora above Osilnica) is a distinctive mountain terrace and scenic peak that rises steeply above the picturesque border valley of the Kolpa River. Although the mountain lies geographically on the Croatian side in the Gorski Kotar region, it represents one of the most important historical, cultural, and spiritual meeting points between the two nations.
The hill's relief offers dynamic stages. A steep ascent from the Slovenian side first leads the hiker to a relief leveling and saddle at around 780 meters, from where only a short, gentle climb remains to the final point at 814 meters above sea level. There stands the Marian shrine. From the arranged viewpoints at the summit, a magnificent panorama opens over the Kolpa valley, Slovenian border settlements with Osilnica in the foreground, and the undulating backdrop of the surrounding Kočevje and Gorski Kotar hills.
For lovers of active movement in nature, Sveta Gora is an attractive hiking destination that offers contact with a pristine, unspoiled forest world. The most authentic and fitness-rich approach leads from the Slovenian side, starting in the valley near Osilnica or Zamost. The path crosses the Kolpa River and quickly turns into a steep but technically undemanding ascent through dense coniferous and deciduous forests, where hikers overcome a good 500 meters of elevation gain over a relatively short distance. The forest creates a pleasant shady microclimate throughout the year, and in autumn the area glows in unique color shades. The summit is also included in a wider network of paths, as the regional circuits Goranska planinska pot (Goranska planinarska staza) and Reška planinska pot (Riječka planinarska obilaznica) pass over it.
At its core, this place is a deeply rooted Marian pilgrimage center with a centuries-old tradition. On the mountain plateau stands the shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whose origins date back to the 15th century. The greatest specialty and central historical treasure inside the church is the chapel, built as an exact replica of the famous Loreto House (Santa Casa), which houses the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary with Jesus. For generations, the shrine has unobtrusively connected believers from both sides of the border. This bond remains alive today, as on the greatest feasts, such as Scapular Sunday in July and especially the feast of the Nativity of Mary in September, masses in the Slovenian language are also regularly held on the mountain. An arranged stone staircase lined with Stations of the Cross chapels leads to the church entrance itself.
Visitors seeking a peaceful retreat from everyday life will find an oasis of silence and tranquility on Sveta Gora. In addition to its rich sacral and cultural heritage, the place offers easy access, as an asphalt mountain road leads to the summit from the Croatian side, from the village of Mali Lug. The location is ideal for a day trip, as it combines refreshing mountain air, discovering history, and enjoying views that embrace both countries. A visit to the area also carries a touch of local mythology, as the area below the mountain is considered the birthplace of the folk hero Peter Klepec, who according to tradition received his miraculous power precisely in these mysterious forests.
