Description of mountain:
The Church of St. Vitus is located at the summit of Šentviška gora, which rises steeply south of Čatež along the Sava River. It is an extremely popular hiking spot that offers one of the finest views in this part of Posavje. Beside the church is a spacious panoramic platform providing a magnificent vista of the Sava River gorge, Brežice, the Krško plain, and the nearby Gorjanci hills; on clear days, the view extends as far as the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. In front of the church entrance, under a shelter, there is a stamp and logbook, and nearby are several benches and tables for resting. The summit is especially appealing in the evenings when the lights of Brežice illuminate below, or on foggy days when the valley is shrouded in mist but the peak basks in the sun.
Šentviška gora is also renowned for its traditional barefoot hike, organized annually since 2014 on the last Sunday in August by folk healer Lojze Ogorevc. In recent years, the route starts from in front of Foto Ivanšek studio, from where participants proceed barefoot to the summit. The event aims to promote a healthy lifestyle and outdoor activity, highlighting the benefits of walking barefoot. The summit program features a varied mix of sports and entertainment with social games, while local music and accordion performances, now a hallmark of this traditional gathering, ensure high spirits.
