Description of mountain:
Vigla is at 1,443 m the highest peak of Mount Kerkis on the Greek island of Samos.
There are several interesting spots on and near the mountain offering great views or worth visiting:
From the summit, there is an excellent view of Ikaria island and the smaller Fourni islands.
SW of the summit, remnants of a Shorts 330-200 plane that crashed into the mountain on August 3, 1989, in cloudy weather (34 fatalities, no survivors) are still visible.
SE of the summit lies Profitis Ilias Monastery (Gr. Προφήτης Ηλίας στον Κέρκη).
To the NE, descending along the ridge trail, is Samos's second-highest peak, Zastano at 1,206 m (Gr. Ζάστανο).
NE at the foot is Kakoperato Cave (Gr. Σπήλαιο Κακοπέρατο), with a monastery en route (signs in Gr. for "ΙΕΡΑ ΜΟΝΗ").
On the slopes grow East Mediterranean pine, cypresses, various oaks; higher up, low thorny shrubbery to ankle height that is honey-bearing, where, like on many high peaks across Greek islands, the Carniolan honeybee (Lat. Apis mellifera carnica) can be observed.
