22nd National Competition Youth and Mountains

On Saturday, January 15, 2011, the 22nd National Competition Youth and Mountains will take place at OŠ Slivnica pri Celju in Gorica pri Slivnici. The official start of the competition is at 10 AM.
26 teams from all over Slovenia qualified for the national competition. Teams of four students from 6th to 9th grade had to demonstrate a lot of mountaineering knowledge at the regional competitions, which were held on November 6, 2010. The regional competitions (total 67 teams) took place at three elementary schools: for the Štajerska region at OŠ Sveta Trojica v Slovenskih Goricah, for Primorska at OŠ Deskle, and for Notranjska, Gorenjska, and Dolenjska at OŠ Šenčur.
The National Competition Youth and Mountains will this time be in the sign of music. This year's additional material consists of a short essay on the theme of music in the mountains and lyrics of songs on the CD of the PZS Youth Commission "Greva pod objem gora". In addition to the additional theme, young mountaineers could dedicate themselves to music in another way – they were invited to participate in a music contest, which will conclude with the award ceremony at this National Competition Youth and Mountains.
The best teams at the 22nd National Competition Youth and Mountains will be awarded with a mountaineering camp in Bavšica (organized by the PZS Youth Commission) as well as cups and medals. The other teams receive practical prizes.

During the breaks in the final, there will be the award ceremony for the best in the music contest "Greva pod objem gora" and for the prize question on knowledge of the surroundings of the competition venue.
The coordinator of the Youth and Mountains competition Brigita Čeh dedicated the following words to all competitors and their mentors: "Every person walks their own path. Some of our paths cross each other. We meet on numerous hikes in our wonderful mountains. On some, we have to overcome numerous obstacles, others we overcome easily. All this succeeds if we are confident and if these mountaineering feats make us happy. Every hike, tour has its beginning and goal. So does our 22nd National Competition Youth and Mountains. Dear young competitors and mentors, you have successfully conquered the first step, the regional competition, and thus found yourselves today at the national competition. You had to put a lot of effort together with your mentors into knowledge of mountaineering contents. But this knowledge has richly paid off with qualification for the national competition."
PZS President Bojan Rotovnik has been following the Youth and Mountains competitions organizationally since the mid-1990s of the last century and notes that the constant of the competition is great interest in this form of activity among young mountaineers. He adds: "But we must be aware – also all competitors together with mentors, that walking in the mountains is not a competition, that knowledge and experience are gained primarily in the mountains themselves. As in the mountains, shortcuts in the competition do not mean a faster ascent. Therefore, those teams are usually more successful for whom this competition represents only part of the year-round mountaineering activity, from which they also draw knowledge for the competition. And that's right."
The president wished the competitors that the learned knowledge would serve them as well as possible for safer and experience-filled mountain visits, and to all together "I wish that in the future the thought from the title of this year's additional material is realized as often as possible: 'Greva skupaj pod objem gora!'"
