4th Day of the Alpine Convention
18.06.2013
Through Alpine valleys by bike and on foot – from Mojstrana to Radovna and Krma!
The Alpine Convention is the first international treaty in the world concerning a mountain area. It was concluded by the countries
of the Alpine arc: Austria, France, Italy, Principality of Monaco, Liechtenstein, Germany, Slovenia and Switzerland, and
the European Community. It represents a common responsibility and a common strategy for coexistence between nature protection and
management of its resources.
The Alps cover an area of 190,959 km², measuring 1,200 km in length and up to 300 km in width. The Alpine arc
rises from the sea and reaches the summit of Mont Blanc at 4,807 meters high. The Alpine mountains extend across eight countries,
with Austria's share being 28.7% of the total Alpine area, Italy's 27.2%, France's 21.4%, Switzerland's 13.2%, Germany's 5.8%,
Slovenia's 3.6%, Liechtenstein's 0.08% and Monaco's 0.001%. The goal of the convention's initiators is to protect the Alps as
a living and economic space, cultural, linguistic and landscape diversity. The Alps, with their biodiversity,
water and forest resources, natural, cultural and economic environment, are home to nearly 14
million people and an attractive tourist destination for approximately 120 million visitors annually. The Alpine Convention
strives for sustainable tourism and sustainable development of the Alps with all their characteristics. It also strives for
reducing traffic burdens, therefore encouraging more nature-friendly visits to the Alps using public transport
and special traffic arrangements in Alpine valleys. The Alpine Convention and its protocols actually
represent instruments for sustainable development of the Alpine space and propose a unified development concept that would
prevent competitive struggles at the expense of nature and ultimately to the detriment of people. With common efforts,
methods must be found that will handle limited resources in the mountain space in the most economical way and without
consequences for future generations. The implementation of the convention's efforts in practice is certainly also the Day of the Alpine
Convention.
You are cordially invited to the 4th Day of the Alpine Convention organized by the Dovje-Mojstrana Mountaineering Association, Triglav
National Park, Slovenian Mountaineering Association, CIPRA Slovenia, Slovenian Mountaineering Museum and Hiša pr Katr

Cycling difficulty:

B: easier cycling, length 14 km.
Elevation difference: A: 540 m, B: 350 m.
Mandatory equipment: mountain/trekking bike with gears and good brakes (B – light cycling, suitable for all
types of bikes), cycling helmet, first aid, preferably spare tube, air pump.
Description of cycling A (Mojstrana–Krma):
By length and according to the surface, the excursion is easy. At the beginning and on the return, a climb to Kosmačev preval (847
m) awaits us on a wide and asphalt road. Follows a fast descent to Zgornja Radovna past Gogalova lipa to Pocarjeva
domačija. There it will be possible to reconsider and join the easier group. More enthusiastic and better conditioned prepared
will head into Krma valley until will or suitable surface runs out, views in nice weather
certainly won't be lacking.
But the climb doesn't run out all the way to the top of Triglav, well, on the bike we will overcome it only somewhere 200 to 250 elevation
meters. Will follow an enjoyable return to Pocarjeva domačija, then for conclusion again Kosmačev preval, only
that from this side the climb is only 100 elevation meters. Follows another fast descent to Mojstrana.
Description of cycling B (Mojstrana–Pocarjeva domačija)
By length and according to the surface very easy excursion. Same as the longer excursion, at the beginning a climb to
Kosmačev preval awaits us, 200 elevation meters, which can be overcome also on foot beside the bike. Follows a fast descent to Pocarjeva
domačija. We will go by shorter path, so we catch the group heading to Krma. On the return we will make
a little detour, to view some more interesting things, descend a bit more down Radovna valley, but not too much and past
Gogalova lipa return to Kosmačev preval, which from this side is half lower, then just descent to Mojstrana.
The excursion is very easy according to the difficulty scale (http://ktk.pzs.si/vsebina.php?pid=121), however not suitable for children,
who have problems with braking on longer descents.

Additional information about the accompanying program on Friday and Saturday, June 28 and 29, 2013:
Film For the Rock Hermit and the Newt (CIPRA, 2013, 16 minutes)
Biodiversity in the Alps is particularly large and precious. But we will preserve it only if we preserve the living
spaces of the animal and plant species living there and establish connections between them. Municipalities can in this
collaborate in numerous ways. Therefore CIPRA prepared a short film, in which it addresses representatives of municipalities and
thus tries to convince them to actually utilize these possibilities.
Film Village, Far from Everything (France, Anne and Erik Lapied, 78 minutes)
In the Indian Himalayan region Ladakh at altitude 4000 meters live Tashi and his sisters. In an idyllic village, where
they have no electricity, the only source of heat for people is a small stove, in which they burn yak excrement.
People are isolated for several months in the year due to snow and avalanches. Only in winter, when the river freezes, it becomes passable.
Then it is the only possibility for people to transport wood for building houses from remote valleys to the village. The path on ice however is
very dangerous …
SLOVENIAN MOUNTAINEERING MUSEUM
In the Slovenian Mountaineering Museum past and present shake hands. Rich collection of objects with colorful
historical narrative, diversity of photographic and archival material and extensive professional library offer
the visitor insight into the mass and importance of mountaineering activity in Slovenian space. The permanent
exhibition is conceived as a museum narrative, which we experience through our own ascent to the mountain
The film Lights of the Mountains shows beauties of Slovenian landscape with special emphasis on the mountaineering part of our land
and its geographical, plant and animal diversity. The film is at the same time also an invitation to the museum and our mountain world.
POCARJEVA DOMAČIJA IN ZGORNJA RADOVNA – INFO POINT OF TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK
The museum-arranged Pocarjeva domačija is considered one of the oldest homesteads in Triglav National Park. With its
appearance, rich collection of exhibited objects and stories it conjures for the visitor a picture of life in places under
Triglav from distant centuries to today. Pocarjeva domačija is a cultural monument of national importance. In the museum
equipped building is the TNP information point. TNP for Pocarjeva domačija in 2006 received the Europa
Nostra diploma within the European Union award for cultural heritage, namely in the category of architectural heritage.
The recognition, as stated in the explanation, TNP received due to »subtle use of traditional knowledges and
materials in preserving rare and authentic example of Alpine architecture from the 18th century and preserving
ethnological heritage and thereby connected local possibilities of income acquisition«.
Film The Last Load – Stories from the Beehive (2004, Studio Alp & TV Slovenija, director: Matjaž Fistravec, 50 minutes)
The documentary film leads us to times, when in the park helicopters were not yet heard buzzing. Triglav porters with
supplying mountain posts in Triglav mountains, with carrying heavy loads on their shoulders,
later on horse backs came to additional earnings, which helped them remain in the valleys. Stories about times that
perhaps irrevocably passed are recorded also on beehive end boards of Psnak's beehive from Zgornja Radovna.
For filming the film father Alojz, son Janko and grandson Mitja once more with horses set off towards Triglav. Thus we learn,
how a typical porter day looked, how work was distributed over the year, about problems with snow, which lies in
high mountains long into summer, about accidents with horses and porters and about special affection to mountains in good and bad,
which such work requires. The film received special jury award at the Mountain Films Festival 2007.

Both books conceived Irena Cerar, published them Sidarta publishing. The exhibition is on view in Snežnik hall.
