5th World Cup lead climbing event
12.10.2013
Today, October 12, 2013, the fifth World Cup lead climbing event of the year by the International Federation of Sport Climbing IFSC concluded in the South Korean city of Mokpo, where our best sport climber MINA MARKOVIČ WON, Domen Škofic complemented her success with 6th place, and Urban Primožič was 13th.
Mina is defending this year her two consecutive overall World Cup winner titles in lead and combined.
Slovenian competitors competed at the FIFTH World Cup lead climbing event IFSC 2013 after Mina's vice-European championship in lead, after the first IFSC World Cup 2013 lead climbing event in Briançon, France, where Mina took silver, after Mina's lead victory at the World Games in Cali (Colombia) - Olympic Games for non-Olympic sports - and Mina's victories at the second World Cup lead event in Imst, Austria, and at the Rock Master event in Arco, Mina's vice-European championship in bouldering, Mina's silver at the 3rd World Cup lead event in Puurs, Belgium, and Mina's 4th place at the World Cup in Perm, Russia. In Mokpo in South Korea, Slovenian colors were represented by: Mina Markovič, Domen Škofic and Urban Primožič.
In yesterday's qualifiers, all three of our competitors handled both routes without issues, topped both, and qualified for today's night (Slovenian time) semifinals as first-placed with full points. Mina shared first place after qualifiers with eight other competitors, among whom was the winner of the last two events, local favorite Jain Kim; among the men, 17 competitors shared first place, including Domen and Urban. After the semifinals, the lead was taken by the currently strongest competitors – our Mina and Korean Kim. Domen shared 2nd place after semifinals, while Urban finished the competition in 13th place. The top 8 competitors advance to the final.
In the final, 19-year-old Domen climbed excellently and achieved 6th place in the end. Mina was by far the best and unbeatable this time. She competed last, after Kim, who topped with 55 seconds remaining. The 25-year-old from Ptuj, who dominated all parts of the competition, climbed smoothly, quickly and without visible difficulties, topped the otherwise very long route in an exceptional time and nearly a minute faster than Kim, earning Mina the gold medal.
In the overall World Cup standings, Markovič is in second place (415 points) behind Kim (445 points), with Japanese climber Momoka Oda in third (also third in this event).
The next event will be in China (Wujiang) on October 19 and 20, where under coach Roman Krajnik the same competitors will participate: Mina Markovič, Domen Škofic and Urban Primožič.
