Accident in the area of Belopeška lakes

1.07.2026
On Monday evening, hikers in the area of Belopeška lakes found two dead people, presumably Slovenian citizens. According to current findings, they most likely died in a mountain accident.

One of the victims, a 49-year-old woman, was found with a personal document. The other person has not yet been officially identified, presumably the child of the first victim. An autopsy will be required to finally confirm the identity and cause of death. Both persons were dressed in sports clothing and equipped for hiking.

The bodies were in an advanced stage of decomposition. The investigating judge, who examined the scene at approximately 900 meters above sea level near rocky cliffs, estimates that the hikers could have died at the beginning of June.

The deceased's car was found in the parking lot today. The keys found in her backpack matched the deceased's vehicle.

The investigation is being led by carabinieri from Trbiž, who are cooperating with the mountain rescue unit of the financial police and firefighters. Prior to the discovery of the hikers, no search operation was carried out in Italy. The Center for International Police and Customs Cooperation Vrata – Megvarje, which takes care of cross-border cooperation between Italy, Austria and Slovenia, also did not receive any reports of missing persons.
