A search operation for a missing 53-year-old Austrian citizen took place in the Mangart area.
It was determined that the missing Austrian citizen was driving his personal vehicle on Monday, May 20, around 10 a.m. on the state tourist road Strmec – Mangart Saddle towards the Mangart area.
His vehicle was found yesterday, May 21 at 10 a.m. in front of the last tunnel before Mangart Saddle. At 12 p.m., a search operation began in the Mangart area under the leadership of the Bovec Police Station, and mountain rescuers from Bovec joined the Bovec police officers and a member of the mountain police unit of the Nova Gorica Police Administration on extremely demanding terrain and in adverse weather conditions.
The helicopter of the Air Police Unit was also activated.
Found dead
At 13:30, a man was found on a snowfield in the approach below the entrance to the Slovenian climbing route at an altitude of about 2,150 meters above sea level, showing no signs of life. There were visible major bodily injuries on his body. The crew spotted him from the Air Police Unit helicopter, and he was also located by the Bovec mountain rescuers at the same time.
According to preliminary findings, the accident occurred presumably while hiking due to a slip. The snowfield in the mentioned area is icy under the snow surface in some parts and at a steep slope angle there. In the further identification process, his identity was determined and confirmed. It turned out to be the missing 53-year-old Austrian citizen.
The police have ruled out third-party fault based on the circumstances at the scene and will inform the Nova Gorica District State Prosecutor's Office in writing about all established facts of the tragic accident.
