Adapted traffic regime on the Strmec–Mangart road
6.07.2021
On road RT-902, section 1019 Strmec–Mangart, an adapted traffic regime will also apply this season.
The concessionaire of the Directorate of the Republic of Slovenia for Infrastructure began in mid-June removing larger rock deposits from the carriageway and ditches as well as snow remnants on the section up to the last tunnel. Snow clearing on the critical section at the last tunnel started this week, when conditions permitted. Behind the last tunnel, the road crosses a very steep slope where large amounts of snow accumulate on the road due to snow avalanches. Cleaning this section is only safe once the snow has been sufficiently removed so that there is no longer a risk of the machine being buried or slipping into the abyss.
The road with the adapted traffic regime will be open to public traffic tomorrow, 7 July 2021.
At Mangartska planina, an automatic barrier with a traffic counter has been installed, and at the road junction at Mlinč, a digital display of parking occupancy. When the road capacity is reached, the digital display shows a notice of full parking occupancy, and the automatic barrier does not open until parking spaces are freed up. Users can also monitor data on the number of available parking spaces on the website of the Traffic Information Centre for state roads.
For visitors who wish to reach Mangartsko sedlo despite the restrictions, public transport from Log pod Mangartom to Mangartsko sedlo and back to the valley will be organised on Saturdays and Sundays in July and August. Departures on Saturdays and Sundays will be every full hour from 7.20 to 16.00. From Monday to Friday, public transport will run twice a day.
The reason for the modified traffic regime is to ensure traffic safety and reduce the burden on Mangartsko sedlo from individual motorised traffic. With constantly increasing traffic, the carrying capacity of the high-alpine environment has already been exceeded, and adequate safety can no longer be guaranteed. The road is steep and narrow, leading through numerous tunnels and over precipitous slopes. Overtaking vehicles is difficult, and parking is limited to available areas along the road below Mangartskim sedlom, as traffic from km 9,500 onwards is prohibited due to the risk of rockfalls.
