After a year off, the World Cup competition returns to Slovenia.
The World Cup competition in sport climbing, originally planned in the Slovenian capital, is moving back to its old venue, Kranj. In Slovenia's third largest city, the 25th World Cup in lead climbing will take place from September 3 to 4, where we can watch the world's sport climbing elite.
After last year's competitive break, when only one World Cup event was held, this year it's almost back to normal. The competition season is in full swing, Slovenian climbers are bringing excellent results home, and Slovenia will host a competition again. In the Gorenjska capital, the elite of sport climbers will gather from September 3 to 4 and show the best they can. The IFSC calendar originally listed the date as September 4 and 5, but it has been shifted by one day to a more spectator-friendly term.
“The Kranj wall has been hosting World Cup competitions in sport climbing for a quarter century. This year's organization will be additionally influenced by the COVID-19 situation, as in addition to the current conditions for holding it in Slovenia, the IFSC international federation's protocol must also be respected, which dictates additional conditions. We are certainly pleased after last year's cancellation of most events worldwide that competitors and spectators are returning to major sport climbing events here too,” said PZS General Secretary Damjan Omerzu.
At the competition, organized by the Alpine Association of Slovenia under the auspices of the International Federation of Sport Climbing, we of course count on the successes of Slovenian athletes. The first in line for a medal is undoubtedly the world-class star Janja Garnbret, who has won gold medals at both lead events this year and is the main candidate for a medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Vita Lukan, Mia Krampl, and Lučka Rakovec also qualified for the final. The latter won a bronze medal at the Kranj event two years ago. The men have also shown at recent competitions that they can reach the top positions, and we hope their form will peak by autumn.
More about the competition itself, tickets, and accreditations will be announced in time at the press conference before the start of the event. For now, reserve the first weekend in September for sport climbing!
