An avalanche can surprise you too
16.01.2023
Did you know?
• Approximately 90% of avalanche accidents occur when someone triggers the avalanche.
• Avalanches most often happen on slopes with inclinations between 30° and 45°.
• Most accidents occur on shaded (NW-S-SE) slopes.
• The first 15 minutes are crucial for rescue, as 80-90% of victims are still alive.
This week started with weather that brought snow down to the lowlands.
Since snow and mountain lovers can't just admire the beauty of the mountains from afar, they must be aware of the dangers lurking in the mountains, especially for touring skiers. In conditions with a lot of fresh snow, there is certainly a significant avalanche risk.
You can check snow conditions on the CROSSRISK project website, where you can also check the avalanche danger level for the selected area. The website was prepared as part of international cooperation on the Crossrisk project (Interreg V-A Slovenia-Austria).
We invite you to record your observations on snow conditions in the Varsom Regobs app, and at the same time, you can view observations from others.
Stay safe!
