At Seventy-One on the World's Highest Mountain

29.05.2007

Former teacher, Japanese Katsusuke Yanagisawa became the oldest person to conquer the summit of Mount Everest at the age of 71.

The vital elderly man, who climbed to the top of the world's highest mountain in a group, achieved this exceptional feat last Tuesday. The ascent was made from the Tibetan side.

"Now that I have returned to the valley, I am very calm and satisfied. But I couldn't have done it without the friends who encouraged me the whole time."

The previous oldest conqueror of Mount Everest was also Japanese, achieving the feat last May at the age of 70. In general, the inhabitants of the land of the rising sun are considered a nation that frequently conquers the Himalayan mountain. Nearly 2,000 Japanese have already climbed to the summit, and 202 people have lost their lives in the process.

The Himalayan mountain is attempted by the most diverse people. Thus, a blind man and a man with a prosthetic leg have already stood on its summit, and the youngest climber to reach the top was a 16-year-old boy.
