In Norway, an avalanche buried a group of tourists from Slovenia. One dead, one injured.
One of the four victims of snow avalanches that triggered on Friday in northern Norway is from Slovenia. The avalanche buried a group of tourists from Slovenia and one of its members died in the process, as confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
Other details were not revealed, but sincere condolences were expressed to the family and relatives of the deceased.
The Norwegian newspaper VG reports that it involved six tourists from Slovenia, one of whom died and one is injured. This was also confirmed by the mayor of Kildalen, Anita Nyvoll. VG further reports that it was a man in his forties who was buried by the avalanche in the Storsletta area.
In the wider area, there are at least three or four different groups of Slovenian skiers.
Rune Engeset from the Norwegian Directorate for Water Resources and Energy said that conditions are extremely unstable. "This, combined with the fact that the storm is ending and sunny, nice weather is forecast, worries us greatly. We expect many will head out on excursions, so we hope they choose routes outside avalanche areas," he warned.
On Reinoya island, avalanche sweeps away house and barn
In northern Norway, several snow avalanches triggered within a few hours on Friday. Four people died in total, including two on Reinoya island, where the avalanche carried a house and a barn with 140 goats into the sea.
Victim reports also came from the municipalities of Nordreisa and Lyngen. In Lyngen, an avalanche buried a group of five Italian tourists, killing one and injuring two, reports Euronews.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store described the deaths as a "tragic start to Easter".
At this time of year, snow avalanches occur almost daily in Norway. Experts estimate they threaten seven percent of the country's territory.
On Friday, authorities evacuated several small towns in the Troms province due to high avalanche danger, as meteorologists predicted snow storms and strong winds. Two new avalanches triggered in the area today.
