Burnt Down Hut on Okrešelj
7.11.2019
The Frischauf hut on Okrešelj, managed by the Planinsko društvo Celje-Matica, has burned to the ground. The cause of the fire at the hut, located at 1396 meters above sea level, is still unknown.
The Frischauf hut stands on the lower edge of the glacial cirque Okrešelj above the upper end of the Logar Valley. It is named after Dr. Johannes Frischauf (1837-1924), professor at the University of Graz, tireless promoter of the beauties of the Savinja Alps, humanist and friend of the Slovenes.
The first hut on Okrešelj was built in 1876 by the German-Austrian Mountaineering Association; in 1907 a spring avalanche from Mrzla gora destroyed the hut. In the same year, the Savinja branch of the SPD began building a new hut in a nearby, safer location, which they solemnly opened on 2 August 1908 and named after Dr. J. Frischauf.
The PD Celje-Matica had already lost the Kocbek hut on Korošica a few years ago, which was also destroyed by fire.
