Closure of most hiking trails in Slovenia!

7.02.2014
Extraordinary weather conditions in Slovenia in recent days have caused glaze ice and especially in the Julian Alps area also large amounts of fresh snow, so in forests and other areas there is a large amount of fallen trees due to glaze breakage and snow breakage. The natural disaster has also caused enormous damage to hiking trails, as they are impassable due to the large amount of fallen trees (and will be completely or partially impassable for quite some time), and staying in these areas will still be deadly dangerous for some time.

The Alpine Association of Slovenia, also on the recommendation of the Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief of the Republic of Slovenia that people should not go into forests, closes all hiking trails in the affected areas until further notice.

Once the situation calms down, mountaineering clubs, trail maintainers, and PZS path markers will inspect the hiking trails and inform us whether the trails are already safely passable. Until then, individual hiking trails will remain closed. We will promptly publish the list of reopened hiking trails in the affected areas on the PZS website, http://stanje-poti.pzs.si.

Hiking trails remain open in areas not affected by the disaster. List of municipalities where hiking trails are not closed: Beltinci, Brda, Cankova, Črenšovci, Dobrovnik, Gornji Petrovci, Grad, Hajdina, Hodoš, Izola, Kidričevo, Kobilje, Komen, Koper, Križevci, Kuzma, Lendava, Moravske Toplice, Murska Sobota, Odranci, Piran, Puconci, Razkrižje, Renče – Vogrsko, Rogašovci, Sežana, Središče Ob Dravi, Starše, Šalovci, Šempeter – Vrtojba, Tišina, Turnišče, Velika Polana, Veržej.

We also warn: Due to the high risk of snow slab avalanches, we also advise against visiting the mountains, as under such conditions we can expect numerous medium-sized and many large spontaneously released avalanches, including those on moderate slopes. In the broader area of the Julian Alps (including the western part of the Karawanks) more than a meter of new snow has fallen in recent days, so there is a high avalanche danger. This will increase with the expected rain at the end of the week up to 1000 m above sea level, while higher up we expect new snowfall. Therefore, in the coming days, we absolutely advise against hiking in the high mountains.

Movement in the natural environment these days should be limited to gentler and lower-lying areas that are sufficiently away from established avalanche paths and outside forests and areas affected by glaze or snow.

Mountaineering clubs and mountain visitors can report data on the condition of hiking trails to the e-mail: poskodbe.poti@pzs.si.

With best alpine regards.
