In the last two months, caterpillars have appeared on oaks in the Gorenjska region that can cause itching and redness of the skin upon contact, and in extreme cases also breathing difficulties. The caterpillar has dark red spots on its dorsal side from which hard hairs grow. The ventral side is greenish, and the sides are whitish. The caterpillars of the oak processionary moth have fine stinging hairs that cause inflammation with itching upon contact with human skin, leading to caterpillar dermatitis or lepidopterism. Children and the elderly are particularly sensitive.
Those moving near trees infested with caterpillars should protect their skin (long sleeves, trousers), respiratory tract and eyes. The Institutes of Public Health are responsible for controlling the insects in urban areas.
