Day of Slovenian Mountaineering Experiences 2016

14.06.2016
Day of Slovenian Mountaineering Experiences 2016 with the opening of the Slovenian Touring Cycle Route.

The Alpine Association of Slovenia (PZS) has been celebrating the Day of Slovenian Mountaineers for more than 30 years, and for the fifth year under the umbrella of the Day of Slovenian Mountaineering Experiences, the program will be enriched with a free all-day event for adults, young people and the youngest mountaineers, touring cyclists and other nature lovers. The Day of Slovenian Mountaineering Experiences 2016 on Saturday, June 18, at the Mozirska Hut on Golte, which is celebrating 120 years this year, heralds the start of the summer mountaineering season, and together with partners it is organized by PZS, PD Mozirje and RTC Golte. On Saturday there will also be the opening of the Slovenian Touring Cycle Route, a circular cycling route that bypasses all major Slovenian mountain groups, measures around 1800 kilometers and overcomes 50,000 meters of elevation gain.

Experiences for young mountaineers include a family orienteering hike, creative workshops, climbing on a climbing wall and a fun mountaineering school, mountain rescuers will demonstrate a rescue exercise for a paraglider from a tree and mountain rescue equipment, the Police will perform a helicopter exercise. Adults will be able to choose from several guided mountaineering trips: hikes to Golte from starting points in Florjan, Šmihel nad Mozirjem, Ljubno ob Savinji, Rečica ob Savinji, Žekovec and Smrekovec, and trips around Golte: along the natural science circular trail, to Boskovec, visit to the Alpine Garden and presentation of the Mozirska požganija forest reserve. Touring cyclists, who can join guided ascents to Golte from Šmihel nad Mozirjem, Najovnik nad Črno and Šentjanž and the tour from Golte to Smrekovec, will rejoice that day at the opening of the Slovenian Touring Cycle Route, and the main event will be enriched, besides the procession of club standard-bearers, by performances of mountaineering choirs.

>>> The full PROGRAM is published on the PZS website and in the leaflet ( http://www.pzs.si/javno/javno/Dan%20slovenskih%20planinskih%20dozivetij_2016_splet.pdf ).

Touring cycling is becoming an increasingly popular activity among members of the Alpine Association of Slovenia. As additional incentive for its development, the PZS Touring Cycling Commission has prepared a circular cycling route that bypasses all major Slovenian mountain groups, measures around 1800 kilometers and overcomes 50,000 meters of elevation gain. The Slovenian Touring Cycle Route (STKP) is a clear example of a contribution to sustainable mobility and one of the largest projects in the field of cycling in Slovenia, which requires close cooperation with local mountaineering clubs, local communities and other organizations in mountaineering, tourism and hospitality. Since the coordination process with path owners is still ongoing on some sections, the STKP will change slightly in some places.

"The basic route of the Slovenian Touring Cycle Route is not technically particularly demanding, because we want to attract a wide range of touring cyclists, but it is strenuous in places, sometimes the bike will have to be pushed, but never carried. The route follows quiet side roads, field paths, forest tracks and trails. In the recommended direction, it is rideable almost entirely for well-prepared cyclists. We will gradually add short more demanding variants to the basic route, intended primarily for descents. The route is laid out so that it often passes railway stations, with which we want to encourage visitors to arrive and return from the starting points of multi-day stages by train," emphasizes the head of the PZS Touring Cycling Commission KTK Jože Rovan and adds: "Cyclists will get to know the diversity of the Slovenian upland landscape and numerous important points of mountaineering, ethnographic and technical history (Slovenski planinski muzej, Kugyjev spomenik, Alpski botanični vrt Juliana, Informacijsko središče TNP Dom Trenta, rudnik Idrija, turistični rudnik in muzej Mežica, spomenik štirim srčnim možem v Bohinju, Pocarjeva domačija etc.). The route passes 112 control points, cyclists will prove the visit with stamps in the STKP Logbook. Among the control points there are also around 50 mountain huts in mostly less visited mountain areas, so we expect the route to make a significant contribution to the huts' financial results. The route offers opportunities also to numerous smaller tourist providers in some remote, but no less interesting areas of Slovenia."

The opening of the Slovenian Touring Cycle Route will be on Saturday, June 18, 2016. The main event will be as part of the Day of Slovenian Mountaineering Experiences on Golte, while on various sections of STKP across Slovenia, tours will be organized, led by qualified touring cycle guides and free for participants.
