Dead man found below Krn

10.01.2024
Police and mountain rescuers found a man's body below Krn. He probably slipped on frozen snow and died from the fall. Police urge hikers to exercise caution due to winter conditions.

Police were informed on Tuesday evening that relatives are missing a man from the Koper Police Administration area who set off for Mount Krn on Monday. Despite "numerous activities carried out," the man was not found that evening, but they located his vehicle parked near the village of Krn, reports the Nova Gorica Police Administration.

Today (Wednesday) morning, a search operation began in the Krn area, involving Bovec police officers, mountain police unit officers, and Tolmin mountain rescuers. At 9:26 a.m., a male body was found above Kožljak below Krn at an altitude of approximately 1500 meters. The doctor ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police notified the Nova Gorica investigative judge and the local state prosecutor's office about the discovery.

According to initial information, the man most likely slipped on frozen snow during the ascent to Krn and later succumbed to injuries in the fall, reports the Nova Gorica PA. Third-party involvement is excluded based on current data. His identity will still be verified, and given the circumstances, police do not rule out that it is the missing person.

Caution in the mountains
Police warn that the mountains have had demanding, dangerous winter conditions for several weeks. Any trip to the mountains requires thorough preparations, extensive experience, good and appropriate equipment, and a great deal of caution.

"Regardless of the snowpack thickness, the snow has already created conditions that greatly increase the danger level. Where there is little snow, we encounter icy patches; where there is more, snow forms hollows, is variably consolidated, covers paths, and accumulates or drifts in certain places. Ridges are wind-scoured and icy or hard. With each snowfall, conditions change, so the risk of accidents and avalanches will be greater with each snowfall and change. Extremely dangerous in the current conditions are crossings of exposed slopes and summits with wind-blown snow due to slabs," warns the police, which also offers several preventive tips.
