Destroyed cargo cableway on Jezersko, Kranjska koča na Ledinah undamaged.



Yesterday, June 23, in the afternoon, the lower station of the cargo cableway on Zgornje Jezersko caught fire due to a lightning strike and is completely destroyed. The upper station of the cableway at Kranjska koča na Ledinah is also damaged, but fortunately undamaged. The Alpine Association Kranj will have to repair the damage as soon as possible, while ensuring uninterrupted supply and thus operation of Kranjska koča na Ledinah during the summer mountaineering season.

According to the report of the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief, on June 23, 2015 at 17:04 in Zgornje Jezersko, municipality of Jezersko, at Kranjska koča na Ledinah, the lower station of the cargo cableway caught fire. Firefighters from PGD Jezersko and JZ GRS Kranj extinguished the fire, removed combustible materials, and cleared nearby burnt trees. The structure is destroyed, the supporting rope is severed. Initial findings indicate the fire was caused by a lightning strike on the structure. No one was injured in the fire.



"The hut is undamaged," confirmed the manager of Kranjska koča na Ledinah, Franc Beguš, adding that they have supplies at the hut for about two more weeks, food will need to be carried to Ledine on foot, ask for help from other visitors, and helicopter transport. "We must complete the season, and rebuild the cableway as soon as possible," Beguš said at the start of the mountaineering season. The mountain hut is open daily from June 15 to September 15, 2015.



Just as the Jezersko firefighters were concluding the action and the investigator had completed the inventory, the president of the Alpine Association Kranj, Tine Marenče, had already inspected the damage. "The lower station of the cableway is completely burned down, the supporting and hauling cables have slackened, the supporting poles and upper station are damaged. This is major damage and a financial blow to the alpine association, and at the most inconvenient time – the start of the mountaineering season. We must repair the cableway damage as soon as possible, while ensuring uninterrupted supply and thus operation of Kranjska koča na Ledinah. Fortunately, it's only material damage and as mountaineers are accustomed, we will pull together and resolve it," emphasized Marenče.
