Earthquake of magnitude 3.0 in the Košuta area

29.07.2011
The Environment Agency of the Republic of Slovenia, Seismology and Geology Office reports that seismographs of the national network of seismic observatories recorded on Friday, 29 July 2011 at 12:37 a weak seismic shock. According to preliminary data, the epicentre was 45 kilometres north of Ljubljana, in the Košuta area, on the Austrian-Slovenian border. The preliminarily estimated magnitude of the earthquake was 3.0.

We estimate that the intensity (effects) of the earthquake in the broader epicentral area did not exceed degree III on the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98). According to initial data, the earthquake was felt by residents of Kamniška Bistrica.

Due to the increased danger of falling rocks, greater caution is required for ascents to the Košuta ridge, especially from the northern side. The warning particularly applies to ascents via climbing routes to Veliki vrh, Cjajnik and Košutnikov turn.
