Even in Celje, the mountaineering society feels the burden of hut reconstruction

24.10.2024
On Okrešlju they could succeed with everything in two years, the hut on Korošica is expected to open in 2027
Two huts have burned to the ground for the Celje Matica Mountaineering Association in the past seven years. The new mountain hut on Okrešlju already stands, but due to lack of funds it will still take time before it can host hikers. The construction of the new hut on Korošica is also progressing slowly.

Most members of the quite indebted Jesenice mountaineering association rejected the sale of Tičarjev dom on Vršič a week ago, although they could have obtained 1.2 million euros for it. The best bidder was a travel agency that reportedly has no intention of preserving the status of a mountain hut, which also bothered the Alpine Association.

However, the reconstruction of huts – there are 158 in Slovenia – is a heavy burden for mountaineering associations. They feel this in Celje Matica too; in the past seven years, two huts have burned to the ground for them. The new mountain hut on Okrešlju, where flames completely destroyed the old one five years ago, already stands, but it will take time before around 50 hikers can sleep in it.

They ran out of money; so far they have invested about a million euros, they would need at least as much more. "The original estimate was 800,000 euros," said President of the Celje Matica Mountaineering Association Brane Povše for Radio Prvi. In between, inflation struck along with price increases.

First, the covid-19 pandemic slowed the project, last August extensive floods, this year also two avalanches. "Now we are negotiating to get a financial injection and everything could succeed for us in two years," he said.

The new hut on Korošica could be opened in 2027
Although they initially planned to build a new hut on Korošica, which burned down seven years ago, they sold the land there for 50 thousand euros to the Municipality of Luče. "We were a bit sorry about that, but it was the only option if we want Korošica to stand someday," Povše admitted.

The municipality is striving to arrange temporary tracks for material transport, but the Institute for the Conservation of Nature will most likely not allow it. For now, only helicopter transport should be possible. If last year's floods had not turned everything upside down, they would probably have already started building. They plan to obtain the building permit next year. The new hut, with space for 30 hikers, could thus be opened in 2027, but without state help, it will not be easy.
