Fallen rocks have destroyed the face of Ajdovska Deklica

24.04.2026
The image of Ajdovska Deklica on the northern wall of Prisanka is no more. The stone-carved likeness of the girl with a sad face, considered one of the most beautiful natural artworks, has been destroyed by fallen rocks, TV Slovenija reported. The girl could be seen along the path from the Vršič pass towards Kranjska Gora, and was also visible from Erjavčeva Koča.

Ajdovska Deklica also held an important place in the history of Slovenian cultural heritage, recorded there with folk tales. According to the entry in the collection of short Slovenian folk tales Babica pripoveduje, collected by Kristina Brenkova, Ajdovska Deklica was regarded as a girl with a big heart. She lived under the overhanging walls of Prisanka or Prisojnik and guided travelers through snow drifts over Vršič to Trenta. In gratitude, the travelers left food for her under Prisankom upon their return.

The girl had a special gift with which she could predict the fate of newborns. The legend tells that one night she visited a mountain woman in Trenta who gave birth to a son that night. When she looked into his future, she saw that the boy would one day become a hunter and shoot the immortal zlatorog. He would sell its large horns and attain great wealth. When Ajdovska Deklica's sisters heard of the prophecy, they cursed her for foretelling the death of the holy animal. Upon returning home, sad, she turned to stone forever in the rock.
