"Green Electricity" from Triglav National Park

10.06.2007

Within Triglav National Park, which is under careful environmental oversight, a hydroelectric power plant has been operating hidden from view for years.

It is built in one of the park's most famous areas and uses the Savica waterfall as its energy source. "HE Savica is a test case of how a power plant can be built in the heart of the park that is barely noticeable," says Drago Papler from Gorenjske elektrarne, who wishes the state and environmentalists would more strongly support such green energy projects.

In its history (construction began in 1947), HE Savica has produced one terawatt-hour of electricity, saving 1.2 million tons or 600,000 railcars of coal. If these railcars were lined up, they would form a 900-kilometre-long train – from Bohinj to Stockholm. In addition, the Savica power plant has saved the environment 850,000 kilotons of carbon dioxide, significantly contributing to the fight against climate change, says Papler.

For this reason, the state should provide more incentives and create fewer complications in obtaining permits for such projects, he emphasises.
