On the Slovenian Path on Mangart, at approximately 2500 m a.s.l., four hikers fell ill yesterday. Due to icy terrain, snow and exhaustion, they did not dare to continue the path. The helicopter of the Slovenian Armed Forces with the combined GRZS - HNMP team and Bovec mountain rescuers transported all four to Mangart Saddle.
Also today, two hikers got stuck on the Italian Path on Mangart during descent. Due to icy terrain and without winter equipment, they did not dare to continue the path. Since they were stuck on the Italian side, we had to redirect the rescue to Italian mountain rescuers.
WARNING: Mountains such as Mangart, Jalovec, Triglav, Kanjavec etc. have icy snow patches in higher northern areas, therefore winter conditions equipment in the mountains is essential: ice axe and crampons. Such winter conditions are demanding and do not allow mistakes, so we must also be appropriately psychophysically capable and prepared.
Mountain rescuers must of course respect the state territory and although we have excellent friendly relations with all neighboring mountain rescue services, it can happen that in such border areas mountain rescuers from neighboring countries will assist you.
All rescues fortunately ended without serious consequences. Indian summer does not apply to the northern sides of the high mountains.
