High avalanche danger in the mountains!
17.03.2011
Yesterday and last night there was moderate to heavy snowfall in the mountains. Especially in the high mountains of the Western Julian Alps up to 80 cm of snow fell, elsewhere somewhat less, which has bonded poorly to the base. The snow line was mainly above 1400 m, only occasionally dropping a bit lower.
Avalanche danger is level 4.
What level 4 avalanche danger means, you can read below.
Snowpack stability:
-On most steep slopes it is poorly stable.
Likelihood of avalanche release:
-On sufficiently steep slopes already with minor loading. Under certain conditions spontaneous release of numerous small and occasionally larger avalanches is possible.
Recommendations or warnings for travel in snowy terrain:
-Numerous additional experience and knowledge as well as detailed knowledge of local conditions are required in assessing avalanche-safe areas, which are already very limited. Avoid travel across steeper slopes and gullies (couloirs) and their bases and leeward sides of elevations.
