Honorary Member of the Alpine Club
3.12.2010
Silvo Karo, member of PD Domžale and top alpinist, became an honorary member of the Alpine Club this autumn. He was nominated for honorary membership by President Paul Braithwaite, himself once an excellent alpinist.
The Alpine Club (AC) is the world's oldest mountaineering organization, founded in 1857 in London, where it still has its headquarters today. They have strict requirements for admitting members. A regular member can be an alpinist who has climbed at least 20 noteworthy alpine routes.
For honorary members, the criterion is much stricter. Silvo's achievements at home and abroad, especially in Patagonia, have been closely followed in the AC. The president nominated him for honorary membership because over all these years Silvo has climbed well and co-created the world history of alpinism.
President Braithwaite wrote: "During my presidency, I have had the honor of appointing some of the greatest world alpinists, past and present, as honorary members. Among my choices so far have been Riccardo Cassin (Italy), Jeff Lowe (USA), Tom Romlein (USA), Hamish McInnes (Scotland), Tom Nakamura (Japan), Peter Habeler (Austria), and Erhard Loretan (Switzerland)."
The proposal by President Braithwaite to accept Silvo Karo among honorary members was unanimously approved by former presidents Stephen Venables, Doug Scott, Alan Blackshaw, and Chris Bonington; the proposal by the AC President was also unanimously approved by the AC Board of Directors.
President Paul Braithwaite also welcomed Silvo among the honorary members in the foreword of the November issue of the Alpine Club newsletter (http://www.alpine-club.org.uk/news/newsletters/2010/November%202010.c.pdf): "I am pleased to report that our membership is growing. Slovenian alpinist Silvo Karo has become our newest honorary member. Silvo's achievements, his bold routes in Patagonia, are incredible. Welcome, Silvo."
Silvo was very pleased with the title of honorary member of the AC: "This is a very nice recognition of my alpinistic achievements by a highly respected foreign mountaineering organization."
