Mountain rescuers found the unfortunate Hungarian mountaineer in Kotliška grapa 250 meters below the accident site, sadly without signs of life, as the Mountain Rescue Association of Slovenia posted on Facebook. Thus concluded one of the most demanding rescues of this year, during which they managed on Monday, despite extremely difficult conditions, to rescue the female mountaineer who was climbing with the deceased.
Found him with the help of probes
"Today the conditions improved enough that we could continue the intervention. The Slovenian police helicopter succeeded, despite strong winds, in transporting the rescue team near the accident site. The team descended on ropes into the precipitous gully and began searching for the unfortunate mountaineer using probing," they wrote at the association.
Conditions were extremely poor since Sunday:
Two meters under the snow
They located the mountaineer in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps 250 meters below the accident site, where the Hungarian hiker had been since Sunday. As it turned out, the hiker was sadly dead and more than two meters under the snow.
They lifted him 50 meters higher, where with the help of EMV and extremely demanding winching they managed to get him into the helicopter, which then transported the rescuers to the valley as well. "We are glad that despite the extremely difficult conditions we managed to save the female mountaineer's life from the snow embrace and that the team safely concluded the operation. Unfortunately, it was not possible to help the mountaineer who had already lost the battle," they wrote on social media.
They praised the excellent cooperation of the helicopter crew and rescuers, who performed an extremely demanding task in very difficult conditions. They extend sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
Impossible on Wednesday
On Wednesday the helicopter "could not even approach the gully due to excessively strong winds, and for continuing the classical rescue and foot ascent the conditions were still too threatening," stated the Mountain Rescue Association of Slovenia (GRZS).
The helicopter flew over and tried to locate the casualty more precisely, but the weather conditions remained very demanding. After the flyover, they adjusted the further activities.
On Monday they succeeded in rescuing the female hiker after a prolonged, demanding, and dangerous operation. She was hypothermic but without serious consequences.
