Increased Ice Melting on Antarctica

On
Antarctica, due to higher temperatures, ice has melted in an area approximately
the size of 20 Slovenias, reported the American space agency NASA.
Data collected by its QuickScat satellite between July 1999 and
July 2005 revealed that the greatest ice melting in the last
30 years occurred in January 2005, reports the German news agency dpa.

The
melting occurred in several areas, including places where scientists
considered it unlikely, such as at higher altitudes and
deep in the interior of Antarctica.

Antarctica holds the world's largest
freshwater reserves, and changes in ice volume affect sea levels,
salt concentration, and global weather.
