Janja Garnbret in the fight for the sportswoman title...

16.01.2019
The world's best sport climber Janja Garnbret has qualified among the top ten contenders for the prestigious title of sportswoman of the year 2018 at the World Games. The Slovenian sportswoman of the year 2018 is the only representative of sport climbing and Slovenia in the esteemed international selection for athlete of the year in non-Olympic sports. The final victory will be decided by online voting, which runs until January 31.

Janja Garnbret, the world's best sport climber and Slovenian sportswoman of the year 2018, is among the 10 candidates for athlete of the year according to the World Games. The World Games are the highest sports competition in more than 30 sports that (yet) are not included in the Olympic Games program - sport climbing will become that in 2020 in Tokyo -, and they are held every four years under the auspices of the International World Games Association (IWGA). IWGA has already selected Garnbret, who entered history as the first world champion in the Olympic combined sport climbing disciplines, as the sportswoman of September 2018, and now she is also a candidate for their sportswoman of the year 2018.

The Slovenian sport climbing heroine has successfully passed the sieve of the first voting, in which there were 25 athletes, and on January 16 qualified among the 10 athletes contending for the prestigious international title, which will be decided by online voting. You can vote for Janja on the IWGA website www.theworldgames.org >>>. A vote can be cast once a day from an individual device (computer, phone) or IP address. Voting runs until January 31, 2019, and the winner will be known the next day.

Last year, the World Games athlete of the year was Iranian Reza Alipourshenazandifar, world record holder in speed climbing, and sport climbing celebrated with Adam Ondra as early as 2014, when the Czech became world champion in bouldering and lead climbing.

Garnbret became Slovenian sportswoman of the year 2018 in December and sportswoman of the year according to the Bloudek Awards. The barely 19-year-old Janja Garnbret is the first and only in the world who can boast three world champion titles in three different disciplines. At this year's World Championships in Innsbruck, she first entered history with a bouldering victory as the first climber with two gold medals in lead (which she won in 2016 in Paris) and bouldering (Innsbruck 2018), then as the first winner of the new discipline, the Olympic combined, as the youngest competitor in history, she became the first sport climber with a trio of gold medals in three disciplines. In addition, she won second place in lead climbing at the World Championships and in this season stepped on the first or second step of the podium at every World Cup event – altogether she won six victories in the World Cup, two of them in bouldering, and was second four times. For the third year in a row, she became the overall winner of the World Cup in lead and combined, and despite a truncated bouldering season due to matura, fourth in the overall World Cup standings in bouldering.
