Mina Markovič European vice-championess
14.07.2013
From 11 to 13 July 2013, the European Championships in lead climbing took place in French Chamonix, where Slovenians once again stepped onto the highest steps of the podium. Our best sport climber and current two-time consecutive overall winner of the World Cup in lead and combined Mina Markovič achieved 2nd place, and her success was complemented by Maja Vidmar's 4th place.
Chamonix hosted the European Championships for the second time in history; at the 11th European Championships, Slovenians also had justified high expectations. And Mina and Maja justified those expectations: Mina became the new vice-champion of the old continent in lead climbing, while Maja finished the championship in 4th place after a tense final, with the same result in the final as Mina and Frenchwoman Hélène Janicot, but the placement was decided by the previous semi-final climbing.
The leaders of the Slovenian expedition to the popular winter sports and mountaineering centre at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif, selector of the Slovenian senior national team in sport climbing Simon Margon and coach Roman Krajnik, assembled a team that, besides our top favourite Mina Markovič, also included Maja Vidmar, Tina Šušteršič, Jure Raztresen, and debutants at the European Championships Sergej Epih, Domen Škofic, and Martin Bergant.
The team did not include Klemen Bečan, bearer of two medals from the EP, due to poor form; he did not qualify for the next two World Cup lead events in Briançon (19 and 20 July) and Imst (9 and 10 August). At the last moment, Urban Primožič cancelled his already confirmed participation in this year's most important competition due to a finger injury.
After very successful qualifiers, where 6 out of our seven advanced to the semi-final round of the top 26 best sport climbers (all three girls and three boys, only Jure Raztresen stayed out of the semi-final in 28th place) – which already meant a new greatest team Slovenian success – only our two best sport climbers qualified for tonight's final: Mina Markovič as 1st after the semi-final (tied for the lead with Austrian Magdalena Röck) and Maja Vidmar as 3rd after the semi-final (tied with three other competitors). In the semi-final, Domen Škofic, 10th after qualifiers, finished the championship in 11th place; still underage Martin Bergant took 22nd place overall (19th after qualifiers); Sergej Epih was ultimately 24th out of 26 semi-finalists. The last Slovenian representative in the semi-final, Tina Šušteršič, took 25th place overall after 20th in qualifiers.
This year's European Championships were held in two parts; first in Chamonix were lead and speed (where Slovenians do not compete), with the lead event also serving as the first competition of the season; at the end of August and beginning of September (31 August–1 September 2013), there will also be the European Championships in bouldering in Dutch Eindhoven, which together with Chamonix will count towards the combined titles, for which Mina Markovič will compete as the only Slovenian woman.
Mina, as the only Slovenian sport climber, also awaits participation in the World Games in Colombian Cali at the beginning of August (3–4 August 2013).
