Mountain visits are limited due to flood consequences...

Visits to the mountains are limited to certain parts of Slovenia due to flood consequences.
Numerous places across Slovenia have been affected by storms and extensive floods in the recent period. Although conditions in these areas are calming, special conditions still apply. Storms, floods, and subsequent landslides have left devastation behind. The Alpine Association of Slovenia, which maintains the network of hiking trails across Slovenia, is collecting data on trail conditions and closing damaged sections. In this regard, the association urges hikers not to venture to the most critical areas. Choose destinations for your hiking trip in other parts of Slovenia and do not forget the advice for safe mountain visits.
At the end of last week, Slovenia was hit by catastrophic floods, preceded by storms with windfalls that destroyed the appearance of numerous places. Natural disasters also affected mountainous areas, where starting points for popular hiking trails are located. Markacists, guides, and other members of mountaineering associations who are caretakers of trails in the affected areas are involved in the recovery of damaged homes. Due to landslides, fallen trees, debris deposits, and other materials, the associations have closed the hiking trails.
Closed trails are being entered on the Hiking Trails Status website (link), in the maPZS app, and in the summary news (link). The damaged area is extensive, and we are striving to provide an up-to-date status display.
The most critical conditions are in the Upper Savinja Valley area, Carinthia, and the Kamnik-Savinja area, where most hiking trails are closed. A significant part of the Škofja Loka and Polhov Grad Hills is also affected, so we advise against visiting the mentioned areas.
Mountain huts are normally open and operating on schedule across most of Slovenia, as published on the huts' website (link to the website). Fortunately, mountain huts were not damaged in the recent disasters. However, certain hiking trails or access routes to mountain huts were damaged in the disasters. Until further notice or until normal conditions are restored, mountain huts in the Upper Savinja Valley, parts of Carinthia, and some individual huts in more critical areas (Kamniška hut on Kamnik Saddle, Hut in Kamniška Bistrica) are currently closed.
The coming days will offer more sunshine and call for visits to mountains and hills. If heading to the hills, go to parts of Slovenia where hiking is currently suitable.
How to head to the hills or mountains in the coming days?
First, exclude from your area of interest those areas where conditions for hiking will not be favorable for at least some time (Upper Savinja Valley, Carinthia, parts of Škofja Loka and Polhov Grad Hills, and Kamnik-Savinja area),
check the passability of roads on the promet.si website
choose easy and familiar trails that you approach with great confidence in your physical and mental readiness. You must know that mountain rescuers, police, and military helicopters are heavily burdened in the current conditions and needed elsewhere,
check the openness of hiking trails and mountain huts,
follow the advice for safe mountain visits (appropriate equipment, physical and mental preparation, caution, respect nature, inform others, and stay on marked trails).
If you notice damage on the trail that affects hikers' safety, report it to us using the maPZS app or email us at poskodbe.poti@pzs.si.
Given the extended weekend, we urge all members of the Alpine Association of Slovenia who wish to help the affected with flood and storm recovery to offer your will and strength to them instead of a personal hiking trip. You can offer help via the special Poplave 2023 app (link to the app). Usage is simple. First, register in the system, then you can offer specific services, material resources, or voluntary assistance.
In these difficult times, witnessing the consequences of floods, we express deep sympathy and support to all those affected. As we have proven in past history, together we will find the strength and solutions for reconstruction.
