Mountaineering Assistance to Nepal After the Earthquake
28.04.2015
Slovenian mountaineers and alpinists often visit Nepal, in addition, the Alpine Association of Slovenia has long cooperated with the Mountaineering Association of Nepal, and it has also run a school for mountain guides in Manang for 35 years. Because it wants to help to the best of its abilities after the catastrophic earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25, 2015, it has joined the fundraising for those affected by the earthquake and, in cooperation with the Slovenian Red Cross and the General Consulate of Nepal in Slovenia, calls on Slovenian mountaineers for financial assistance, and will also carry out several other activities to help Nepal.
Nepal is a popular hiking and alpinistic destination for Slovenians, 62 of whom were in the Himalayan country at the time of the earthquake, but according to data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia, there are no injured among them after the strong earthquake, nor are there any PZS organized alpinistic expeditions in the country.
The two countries are linked by long-term cooperation. The Alpine Association of Slovenia was in 1979, with the establishment of the Slovenian mountaineering school in Manang, the first school for guides built in Nepal, the first alpine association to connect with the Mountaineering Association of Nepal and, through training locals, enabled better life and safer work on expeditions high in the Himalayan mountains for 35 years.
The Alpine Association of Slovenia wants to help to the best of its abilities also after the catastrophic earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25, 2015, causing enormous material damage, claiming thousands of human lives, with many people still missing and injured. Therefore, it supports the Slovenian Red Cross fundraising campaign and calls on its members to show solidarity and contribute financial funds for those affected by the devastating earthquake. In addition, it will donate from its own funds to the SRC for aid to Nepal, check the readiness of interested organizations and individuals to organize a charity event in May to raise funds for aid to Nepal, and propose to the Government of the Republic of Slovenia to respond as soon as possible and provide aid to Nepal. These initiatives are also supported by the Honorary General Consul of Nepal in Slovenia, Aswin Kumar Shrestha.
Since the alpine association has a signed agreement with the Slovenian Red Cross, it did not undertake the action independently but joined the SRC and thus asks all Slovenian mountaineers who want to help to make their contribution via payment order BN02 to the address below. All collected funds will be transferred by the SRC to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, as direct transfer is the most effective way to enable the earliest implementation of the most urgent aid programs in Nepal.
