Nearly two million people visit the Julian Alps annually

18.04.2026
They have launched a new regional reservation system for the Julian Alps
The Julian Alps area is visited annually by just under two million people, who generate around four million overnight stays. Tourism workers have been increasingly raising awareness among visitors about nature conservation in recent years.

30 percent of total tourist traffic is generated in the beautiful but sensitive Julian Alps area, so the two biggest challenges are directing visits and properly addressing guests. "That is why we encourage all visitors coming to this space to come for something more. To come where respect is needed, where a certain attitude is required," says Blaž Veber, director of Tourism Bled. Majda Odar from Triglav National Park says: "Regardless of the numerous specialized platforms for hiking, cycling and other activities, the point is that this data is in one place, that it is official and that it reaches the user in a very user-friendly way."

"That we are able to accept 200 cars, but not between 9 and 13 o'clock, but throughout the day. This management is our key goal, so that we offer guests what we sell, what the Julian Alps actually represent," Veber added.

So that the experience is excellent and life is tolerable. Key to this are space and activity management and networking. "Because tourism is such an interdependent industry. At every step, when we step out of the hotel or private room, we step into someone else's space," said Klemen Langus, coordinator of the Julian Alps community. "We can ban everything or manage tourism," Veber said.

"If you close a certain valley, you have to do something, either a central parking lot or organize a different way of access to these places," Robert Klinar, director of the municipal administration of Kranjska Gora, said at the forum.

With the summer season, a new regime will take effect on Vršič – which, along with barriers and limited expensive parking, offers free bus transport between Bovec and Kranjska Gora. "So there will be about 16 buses daily on the route in the high season," Klinar added.

This will ease traffic jams on Vršič and at the same time strengthen sustainable mobility, which is one of the goals of the Julian Alps community.

Julian Alps with their regional reservation system
Representatives of the Julian Alps Community presented and officially launched the regional reservation system at the main annual meeting in Bled.

As Blaž Veber, director of Tourism Bled, said, they have been discussing the establishment of such a system for more than 10 years. All 11 municipalities in the Julian Alps have joined the project, and since they did not find a suitable system on the market, they developed their own, specifically tailored to the needs of this area.

"With this system, we want to achieve independence from other platforms and strengthen the local economy, as various platforms alone take away 25 million euros from the Julian Alps area every year, which do not remain in the destination. At the same time, we also want to connect the community in the Julian Alps," Veber said.
