New entrance facility opened for visitors in Tolmin Gorges

20.03.2026
Last year the gorges were visited by more than 140,000 people
In the Tolmin Gorges, considered the most visited tourist spot in the Municipality of Tolmin, a new entrance facility was opened at the start of the season, which will help provide adequate infrastructure for visitors and employees.

The facility, worth approximately 700,000 euros, has been under construction since the end of 2024.

Acting Director of the Dolina Soče Institute Erika Kašca Špolad emphasized at the ceremony that this is an important step in managing one of the most important natural attractions in the Soča Valley.

The Tolmin Gorges, which last year were visited by a record 140,000 visitors, require thoughtful management that combines safety, a quality visitor experience, and nature protection. The new facility brings better visit organization, organized workspaces, a sales point with local products, and new sanitary facilities.

Visits limited to a maximum of 200 people per hour
In recent years, the area has already been upgraded with parking lot arrangements, introduction of shuttle transports, safety improvements, and regular maintenance of paths and infrastructure. An important step was also the introduction of entry limits in 2023, which enables a more even distribution of visitors throughout the day, said Kašca Špolad.

For the third consecutive year, the visit limit is a maximum of 200 visitors per hour. Since the peak visit is between 10 and 3 p.m., visitors are particularly advised, especially during peak season, to avoid these times to prevent congestion and crowds. This significantly contributes to a better experience and safety for visitors and to relieving the space.

They want to establish an interpretation point
Mayor of the Municipality of Tolmin Alen Červ emphasized that the gorges have developed exceptionally in recent years, whereby together with partners they have pursued a sustainable approach that reduces pressure on the environment and enables coexistence with the local population. The new entrance facility is, according to him, part of efforts to better direct visitor flows and for a higher quality offer also outside the main season.

In the next five years, they plan two more major projects: arrangement of pedestrian walkways between Hudičev most and the entrance to the gorges, and additional parking lot arrangement at Štrklepcah, where they also want to establish an interpretation point that will be the starting point for visiting Kozlov rob and the Church of the Holy Spirit in Javorca and other attractions in the surroundings.

Also the start of the Soča Trout Festival
Today's opening also marks the start of the Soča Trout Festival, which will take place in Posočje between World Water Day and World Earth Day, from March 22 to April 22. With the festival, the organizers – Municipality of Tolmin, Ribiška družina Tolmin, and Zavod za turizem Dolina Soče – emphasize the importance of water, the environment, and sustainable nature management, fishing and fish farming traditions, and related gastronomy. Over the course of a month, several events for the general and professional public will take place, the main one being the Ribja tržnica on April 11 in Tolmin.
